  • Speedo Problem

Ok, here's the deal...My front tire was bad, and I had a perfectly good one on the second(parts bike)frame. Simple...just do a 1 for 1 swap right?

Welllllll, the swap went well, until I did the test ride. No speedo. I know I hooked the tabs up properly, so back to the garage, and did a comparison on the two drive units. Totally different. The speedo on the 78 Standard worked perfectly well until I swapped in the wheel/tire from the 79 Special.

Looking at the wheels, I don't see a difference in them. Possible that something just slipped when I put it all back together? I guess I'm going to have to jack it up again...which is a pita, due to the 4-1 header. I almost dropped the bike a couple times during t the change out.

I guess I'm just hoping someone has an idea of what to check before I tear it apart again.

    Thanks in advance,

    Da Skwerl

Ok, whether they looked it or not, the little tabs that engage the drive gear are shorter in the wheel I just swapped onto the bike. They weren't fitting into the slots of the drive gear.

I pulled the seals out of both wheels, cleaned everything up, new bearing grease, and swapped the tab rings. Grease seal looked good, so re-installed it, and voila!...I can once again tell about what my airspeed is...now to get that altimeter installed

Mods, you can delete this thread if you want, unless you think it may be of help to others.

    Thanks again,

      Hi Skwerl,
FWIW it's the same damn 7-spoke cast wheel in the front of every XS series bike from the XS650 to the XS11.
My XS11SG is rolling on a front wheel out of an XS650 right now.
(you're not the only one to need another front tire, eh?)
You can even swap in an XS650 front wire wheel if your aesthetic sense feels the need.
