  • Carbon Buildup Removal

So I have my cylinder head off and some of the valves have a nice hard buildup of carbon on them. The tops of the pistons look pretty clean (there is even some writing on the crowns of three of them that I can see).

What do you use to get rid of the carbon buildup?

If the valaves are out, squirt them with oven cleaner. Don't use it around aluminum, it will it the s*#t out of it. CZ

I used oven cleaner on my engine with no ill effects. OFC, my engine is painted black, but it worked quite nicely.

I have not pulled them out yet. Any suggestions on how to get them out without having a valve spring compressor?

Gasket remover will devolve carbon and won't eat aluminum like oven cleaner will.

Well I have to ask. Pretty much any valve spring compressor I have ever used or seen has either a straight jaw on top or a very very slight bend. How does it work with the springs recessed into the head like they are?

What I did was pour some seafoam in a tin cup and let my valves soak in it over night then brushed it off with a brass brush. If your valves are in you could turn the head upside down an fill each of the recessed areas with the seafoam and let it soak. (you will also find out if the valves ar sealing properly) there may be some other product that is cheaper to use.

You have the head off why not just take the cams off? It wouldn't take much to do at this point and you can save the money from the spring compressor and buy valve guides instead!

Sorry nate, I've never taken the valves out of the head so Im a little inexperienced. Origionally I was thinking the valves would just slide out then I remembered that something has to stop them from dropping into the cylinder. Probably has some type of clip eh, hence the need for the spring compressor.

You'll have to take back all those empties and fork out for a new spring compressor. You're welcome to use mine but the shipping would be the same cost for a new one.

Yeah I ordered the one from MikesXS. I could not think of a way to get the retainer clips back on without it. Getting them off would not have been a problem.......
