    New 11 owner here with my first question

    Hidey ho my riding compadres! I recently bought a really nice '79 XS11SF from one of the members here. She's nearly all stock and in really nice shape - only about 7,300 miles. I'm the type that likes to tinker and mildly customize so I'll be bugging you guys with questions in the future My first question has to do with a kick starter I'm installing. I found one on ebay from an XS850 Special and it fits the description and pictures I've seen of the proper ones. However, in order for it to clear the brake lever when it's rotated downward, I must keep it about 1/4" off the shaft on the bike. Even then when turned in and not in use it still touches the side of the airbox. Is this "normal" or did I get the wrong lever? Thanks!
    BTW, this is the same bike I had when I was 18 and she sure brings back memories!

      Congrats on your bike Just a ?, why do you want to mount the kick starter all the time? Most early 1100s had a back up JIC starter for emg if any at all. Is your bikes elec. starter not working right? Not sure but I think the 750 and 850 kick were diff. from the emg. starter of the early 1100s, then they did away with it in 1980 all togather

          Ha! That's a good question - I should have mentioned that I just like the looks of the kick starter. I would also like it to be functional as well though.

              There are a few threads that speak to the XS850 being a great perm mount kick for the XS1100.

              Keep in mind that on the XS1100 if you do not have enough battery juice, then it will not fire the bike. The 1100 engine runs off the battery at all times, the alternator in turn charges the battery at all times while running. The alternator does not however run the bike (in essence anyway).

              Just a few thoughts.

                  Here are two links to kick starters for xs850 and xs1100, you can see one is JIC 1100, the other is OEM eq xs850, If you want the 850 then mod the 1/4" and pad the air box

                          Hi 'Rider,
                          Dismantle the KS, torch the bend straight, let it cool, reheat the arm further up the shaft and re-bend it to reach further out to clear the brake pedal. Do NOT quench! There may be enough carbon in the steel for it to get hard and brittle if it's quenched. You don't need a brittle kicker, right?
                          If you can afford it, get it re-chromed. If not, spray it silver. Or black. Or to match the tank paint.
