  • How Much Fork Oil

The manual says 7.17 oz and then in parenthesis it say 2.12 cc or 5.97 Imp oz. None of those numbers equal each other, so which one do I use. The 2.12 cc is obviously not right cause that is hardly anything at all. So here I come to ask the gurus. Home much fork oil is about right? if it matters I am using ATF for the time being.

Ok so I was trying to pull the forks apart and I cant get the allen bolt out. The internals of the fork just spin with the bolt. I put the spring back in hopping it would hold tension on the internals but it still just spins. Even compressed the fork with the spring in it and it still spins.

I did mine on the bike. I had to use a ratchet strap to compress the fork before it would come loose.

I had made a tool for rebuilding the forks on my wife's VMax a few years ago. Basically it was a 5/8" bolt welded into a 3 foot long tube with another 3/4" bolt welded in the other end. I think a 5/8" bolt has a 3/4" hex (about 19mm) which fit in the hex inside the fork tube (the hex in the fork had a lot of play for an 18mm so the 19 had a nice tight fit). That held the lower tube so you can pull the bolt out. The 3/4" bolt had a 15/16" hex (about 22mm) which fit the 91-up VMax forks so one tool could do every year up to '07. I built a few of them and sold three or four on ebay but interest dried up so I stopped. It's really easy to make. For the XS you'll need to try a few bolts until you get one that fits then weld it on to the tube. I used a magnet to lower the bolt in the tube to size it the first time until I realized the part number for the special fork tool listed in the Yamaha VMax manual actually had "18MM" and "22MM" in the part number. If you check the Yamaha manual for the XS I'm sure it's in there.

              Hi Nate,
whizzing it out with an air wrench has always worked for me.
The fork tube's own inertia holds it from turning as fast as the air wrench can spin the bolt.
Stay with the 212cc metric volume, although the US and Imperial fluid ounces are different, I think Clymer's has screwed up their conversion.
