  • My ride is hard down

We our Lexington VA ride did not turn out as expected. It was supposed to rain tomorrow! Anyway, my bike started missing then would clear, miss and so on. Eventually it got to a point where I could only accelerate very slowly, then it finally started fading. In a gas station I did the pipe spritz – 1-4 were cool indicating a bad coil. But as I pulled into a rest area it quit altogether. First thought, jumped cam chain. I get spark, even on the bad jugs so I’m not sure how to proceed. Need to get her home first. Then I can start trouble shooting the electrics. I guess you do a compression check for a jumped cam chain. Makes no odd noise otherwise.

It's enough to make me say enough.

possibly be your pic up coils
could have a broken wire, which would effect 1 and 4 also,

usually if the cam chain has jumped a tooth or 2
    youll hear it,
u can remove the left side timing cover and turn
the engine over using a spanner, if you can rotate the engine freely
you should be sweet on that part.

If the engine was running normally when you started your trip it is likely electrical as others have concluded. 1 & 4 are shared electrically so check the pick up coil wires for breaks and or short out to the moving parts under the timing cover. If their good it may be a weak connection or faulty part between the pick ups and the coils. If you have good spark on all 4 when the bike is not in operation it is likely the pick ups.

Start checking the connections for the pickups under the tank right behind the neck. I had a bad double female connector right there and it started acting up when it was wet, then finially had enough and stoped working all together.

Thanks for your responses. I got it home this afternoon. I'll start checking the electrics this week. I've all the parts for a DynaCoil upgrade so I'll finally do that. I've also have an extra pu mech so I should be able to swap out that easily. And I'll be sure to check out the wires on the neck.

If it were me, I'd check the pickup coils and get that corrected first. Then change out the coils. If you change coils first, you might create a separate problem if its the pick up coils to begin with. Just my thoughts.

But I agree it would be pickup coil wire most likely.

That is my course of action. Replace the PUC and see if that fixes the problem. At least 2/3 coil should fire, 1/4 coil may be fried though it passes the ohm test.

Remember that you don't have to replace the whole mechanism. Just the wires need to be spliced, to remove the old, weak wire.
