  • 80 XS11 Special

When i finally got it wednesday it ran like crap.
Flooding out, #1 intake was wet and pulsed, #3 carb leaked gas onto the engine. Extreamly hard starting. Once warmed up it was even harder. You so much as think about touching the throttle and it was flooded.
It hesitated hard off idle, wouldnt idle right, fluttered, hardly pull itself under 4000rpm. #3 and 4 would cut out and not run at all. Fuel line was kinked bad.
Basically it was a piece of sh*#.

PO did tell me it had major carb issues. I knew it before i bought it it needed work. Nothing was hidden prior to purchase, i got what i expected.

I took two intakes off my 79 and the carbs, put them on.
Theyve been sitting outside for about 3 years, dont think the bike has ran since long before that. PO had removed the plugs and exhaust. I could tell the intake was open on #3 because of the dirt and rust inside #3 carb.
I didnt clean anything, just sprayed the carbs out with Zep 45 (like WD40 but better).

Installed the 79 Carbs as is. Had to use ether to get the bike to fire but once it started pulling gas it ran on its own.
Its running great now. Idles 1100rpm, pulls hard from idle to 8500rpm, jammed it hard from a stand still to 105mph and not one hesitation.

    Looking up.

If your carbs were leaking onto your engine they would have been leaking gas into the engine also . Change your oil before you ride it again.

Oils good but had to add a liter. Going to do an oil change tonight. Tank looks good when i look through the top.

        Same. Oil change tonight.

On a side note, it sounds pretty good without mufflers. Ill put them back on though.

Well, stock 79 carbs are on, 79 air box is on, stock filter is in (K&N was the wrong size and didnt even fit in the box right).
Bike runs great now. Thinking of trying out the stock exhaust to see if it runs even better.

Has a bit of a bloop bloop bloop out the exhaust on slow deceleration and a bit of a pop. Could be normal.

After installing the air box and filter i had to lower the idle. Went from 1100rpm (open carbs) to 2000rpm with airbox installed.

          4 New NGK BPR6ES plugs.
          20W50 oil and new filter.
