  • Brake equalizer?

Has anyone modified/ eliminated the proportioning valve setup like I have on my 81 MNS where you step on the rear brakes and it also engages the front on one side? I would really rather control my brakes MYSELF- I don't like the way they feel- Doesn't feel like positive stopping. I actually want to be able to lock up the rear tire if I choose. Thanks guys....

Yes, a few have done it (though I still can't understand why...). You can just cap the front connection on the valve, and get a larger front Master cylinder to handle the additional load (the stock front MC on the LH is too small for that). The stock ones from any other year Special will work. Then you need the correct brake line and a double banjo bolt to connect them to.

      XJ Rear Master

I have the same problem as you do. I don't see the need to lock up the rear wheel, but I would feel better if the bike was able to do so. The thread on the banjo bolt is a M8-1.25 I think. I did buy a tap and intend to hook my rear brake line directly to the master like the "normal" xs rear M/C. However I'm not going to do it until I have a working spare M/C. The proportioning valve is 40% rear/60% front. I have been told hooking the brake line to the front outlet will give you some more brake force. I don't know for sure because I haven't gotten around to trying it.

After looking at my earlier post, I should have said I have my dual port M/C is hooked up in the back only. That being said, I have the same 40% rear braking power you have.
