Some judicious dabbing of carb cleaner will swell the seals. Happened when I was cleaning my carbs. Seals swelled up that the butterflys would hardly rotate. Took them back down with brake fluid.

Its worth a try if you're going to replace them anyway.

        32 yrs

I would imagine that rubber 32yrs old will be hard as a brick and probably cracked or broken too. I might try those ideas though....

Remember - grind off the peened end of the butterfly mounting screws before you try to remove them. Put them back in with some blue loctite.

Or, you could all the preliminary steps and jump immediately to the smashing-the-damn-carbs-with-a-hammer-while-shrieking-maniacally-in-frustration stage. Saves a lot of time.

Good luck, Dick. You are going to need it.

                No more stumble...

I am the luckiest guy on earth and I also have the greatest friends possible. My good friend 3phase came by today and gave me a complet set of carbs that solved the problem and another set that needs some work. Now all I have to do is find a set (2) 117.5 main jets and replace the needles with those that I can adjust for the midrange. The plan is to take the two 120's in the outside and move them to the middle two cyls and put the new 117.5's in the outside which should make the top end wake up better then change the needles and adjust the midrange. I'm still gonna try to do the rebuild on the other set I took off.

<face-palm> You know, I totally forgot to ask if you had any jets on-hand .... </face-palm>.

The 'new' set of carbs has 110 mains/42.5 pilots in it now.
