  • Suggestions on adding an ignition interupting teather?

    Hey guys,

I want to go do some more drag racing but the track Im going to requires that I have an ignition interupting teather kill switch. Its a fairly simple two wire switch but I have never installed one and would like some advice on what wires I should tie it into. I will have the switch mounted on the handle bars somewhere and it has about 6 inches of wire with it. My only concern is having the ugliness of the splice visible and it being water tight. Is it possible to run the wires right into the right hand control and tie it into the stock kill switch? I'd appreciate and advice on where or how to install this. Thanks.

By far the easiest place to install that is on the bars right next to the factory kill switch. Splice the tether switch wires into either side of that (I'm sure it would be possible to hide the splices inside the switch housing) and you're done...

Yeah I was thinkin the same thing. Keep the splice in the controler and it will probably stay H2O tight, and I will be able to undo it at a later date and keep it lookin stock... Any idea if the circuit is closed when the stock kill switch is in the run position?

If they'll let you do it, you could install the tether switch without cutting any wires. The wires attach to the stock kill switch with screws (not solder like the others), so if you installed two matching eyelets on the new switch, just hook those under the existing screws. To go racing, plug in the tether and turn the stock switch 'off'. Pull the tether and the bike should die. Done racing, turn the switch back on and you don't need the tether. But I'd ask if that will pass tech...

Thanks Steve, there will be a tech inspection and I might better have it such that it will kill the ign even if the stock switch is in the run position just in case.

Here is the place Im going to.

The tip over switch does not count?

Nope, it has to be a tether attached to the rider. That did not work Steve, the circuit for the stock kill switch is normaly open to run the bike, I expected it to be closed to run. The teather I have is open to kill, therefore I need a closed to kill tether or a new ignition point to interupt... Doesnt look like I will be racing tomorrow b/c its getting late and I have to be there at 8:30 am to register and I cannot get my hands on the other type of tether. At this point, the only other access point that I can think of is for the key ignition and Im not sure how easily that can be accessed.

Does it have to be mounted on the bars or could you mount it to interrupt the main power at the fuse box? Side cover off for the race and tethered there, every day riding side cover on and switch hidden. JAT

I guess I never thought about that... not sure if that will satisfy tech inspection or not... The ignition fuse is 10A... Im not sure if this switch can handle 10A. Since the tether switch is closed to kill, how would I hook it up? Short it to ground?

P.S. The stock kill switch is closed to run, open to kill.

The tipover switch grounds the TCI to kill the ignition. You could remove the tipover switch and run a couple of wires out to the tether switch or leave the tipover switch in place and run the tether in parallel with it. It's up to you.

At the tipover switch: the Black/White wire is hot from the TCI; the Black wire is ground.

                      Have fun!

Thanks for the advice guys, I ended up hooking it to the tip-over switch plug. Decided to unhook the tip-over and cut the plug off. I have the correct female pin connectors so I was able to attach the OEM plug to the tether and plug it in inplace of the tip-over.
