  • new owner, any way to adjust very high idle?

    Hey everyone,

I just bought bike two days ago. It looks and runs awesome. Anyway, after running for a minute or two, the idle jumps up to around 2,300 rpm's and will not go down. It idles right around a grand at first and then jumps. Is there an adjustment I can try? Didn't come with owners manual or anything. I found a link on one of our threads last night, but the the download tells me files are damaged. Also, if anyone could help, trying to figure out turn signals, whether I'm using wrong or prob. Sometinmes when I go to use, the light stays on steady. After moving lever back(without cancelling)and trying again, they work. I also do not understand auto cancel feature? Any help greatly appreciated. By the way, its an xs11,sorry

78 and 79 models (BS34 II carbs) have the idle adjustment knob between carb two and three, rear of carbs near the top of them.

81 to 82 models (BS34 III carbs) have the knob between carb two and three, bottom rear.

High idle after it warms up a little points to needing to sync the carbs

welcome to CH 11 ... have any pics of your XS?

      Turn signals

      Clean the wire connectors.
XSpecially the grounds on the rear turn signals.
Rare but sometimes the light bulb socket gets corroded and needs to be cleaned too.

Thanks for help. Love the bike, just gotta get used to it. Shouldn't be that bad. I upgraded from 77 CB750 and it had it's quirks.

If it runs at 1100 when started, then after warm up 2000+, it is your carb's out of adj. got to be a bitch to shift to first, "clink"! Sync. the carb's and then turn down idle to 1100 rpm before riding/clunking the trans.

                      Hi dschmitta and welcome,
about how the signals should work:-
The thumbswitch is spring-loaded to return to the centre position. To turn the signal off again, push the switch straight in from the central position.
The self-canceller works by getting a signal from a reed switch in the speedo that counts a certain number of times the speedo drive turns then switches the flasher off.
The only flasher that will work with the self canceller is the appallingly expensive ($80+!!!) stock unit. The stock unit will only work if it's driving at least 2 x 27Watt bulbs. Higher loads flash it faster, lesser loads (say you subbed in 22W bulbs) and the signals just stay on steady.
You can swap in a $10 electronic 2-pin flasher and lower wattage bulbs will work fine but you lose the self-cancelling feature.
Before you get medieval on the system, clean every contact, connection and switch in it.
