You know, I've never been able to get a socket on those bolts, either.

I use a box end wrench with a short piece of pipe over it for leverage and block the rear wheel with a board so it can't turn. I've used the rear brake to hold the wheel a few times, too so there's less flex in the driveline than using a board.

It's a little fiddly but I can remove and replace the bolts and get them pretty close to the correct torque without losing too much skin off my knuckles.

Hey, don't get me wrong; I do use red loctite, but I'm pretty selective about where I use it. Unless it's a fastener that has a known issue with coming loose (or a factory recommendation), I've never had blue let me down.

I own Harleys too, and trust me, if blue won't do the job, you'll quickly know it... I buy the blue in the big bottles...

alright, all of you who said 6 point box end wrench, you are all owed a beer. next time you are in Maine, stop by eastport and claim them.

now, thanks to you guys and a little elbow grease from me and my father in law, the engine is out of the frame, and all the parts are in the basement now, ready for restoration. maybe i should start a build thread? hmmm....
