OK, I am hoping to hear from some who have been around these bikes for years. I had a friend who raced sprint cars with XS1100 motors and he said the crank set-up was bullit prof. never had one fail even in racing conditions. Now on here some are talking about rods and mains going out like a normal thing? I did have a gas overflow once and came out the air box but fixed the leak and changed the oil right away. How common is crank prob. on these with 17000 miles?

In ym two years in the site, I've only twice heard of someone losing a crank or bearing.
Typically, it is only when someone does something really ...umm...not to smart!
It is more common to find these engines with 80-150k miles with no problems at all. Many state almost twice as many with no issues.
Now, running the engine with gas in the crankcase thinning out the oil and getting to the bearings, well, count that as among the "not to smart!"Life is what happens while your planning everything else!
When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt.

I've got one that I THINK has a rod knock, but I haven't opened it up yet to see (no place to work on it YET). So I don't know for sure quite yet, but it sure sounded like a rod (I've had rod knock in other engines) to me. But then I don't know what the PO did to it. But I like overkill, so I have the original to rebuild, another sitting in it's frame that I got from dragxs this spring, and the $99 junk yard engine that's in the bike now. It's got a rattle that sounds like it's in the top end, but once again, I don't really have anyplace to work on it yet, but I hope that changes soon. If it does, I'll be into the original right away to see what's wrong with it, and I'll probably check out the other one before installing it as well. It's been too long without a garage and/or workbench.Cy

Thanks DGX, kinda what I was thinking, I had two on here say my rattel was a rod or main and I just cant see it. I rebuilt my first and only spun rod bearing motor for a friend in a 70 SS car when I was 16. When I took it apart the PO had rebuilt it a mixed the rod caps up on two piston rods. Now I could understand that killing a bearing. I also cant see how a little gas leak to oil for a very short time would spin a rod. I have tore down many race engins the had gas from blow by and cab flood and still no real bearing damage. I just didnt know if these bike had a prob that I didnt know about, thanks.1979 XS1100 Special (Mad Max, OEM) Current
