What do you mean by a "hole"?

Sometimes the soldered seams on the earlier brass floats can come apart, letting fuel into the body of the float, and of course it then 'sinks'. You could set them carefully by measuring from the carb body, etc, and still not get things right when that float promply sinks when you turn on the gas. I suppose later plastic floats could crack but I've never hear of that. I don't think this is nashville_bill's problem because he is working with later carbs, presumably with plastic floats, and we can actually see the fuel level he is getting. If he had a sunk float, it would show up immediately in that level of that tube.

That black plug might only carbon up on idle. Maybe number 4 idle jet is screwed out too much?

Also, is it possible that number 4 carb has either a different needle position or an odd sized pilot jet, pilot air jet, or main jet?

I put the carbs back together on Saturday afternoon and installed new needles in the float valves. I also swapped the main jets, pilot jets, floats(plastic not brass) and float valves between #1 and #4. I didn't swap the plug wires. I didn't have time to sync or even adjust idle screws before a ride to antique car show that evening but ran fairly well.

Now #1 float has a little more gas in it that the other three and #1 plug is sooty - #4 looks good. I will adjust the float level today and then sync and adjust idle screws.

Being that #1 float needed adjusted, I was able to remove the bowl and float (several times) and adjust it to match the other three. I had to bend the float quite a bit more that the other floats, so there must be something different about that float. I could tell a big diference after getting the float to the correct setting. After a slight adjustment to the sync, It runs really good now. I will check the plugs after riding a hundred or so miles.
