Yes, it sounds like an idiot check, but, have you verified the cable did not fall out the back of your speedometer? It can happen, trust me.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

just checked, the cable is screwed in and attached, to the speedometer, i unscrewed it and screwed it back in just for fun, is there supposed to be a gear or anything on the end of it? all I saw was a square piece of metal cable . . .1979 XS1100SF 37000km

Yep, each end has a squarish end to it that fits in the squarish hole inside to drive the internal gears (or be driven by them depending which end).Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

mine did that last year. It turned out to be the dog ear on the axel broke. Took front tire to the local shop and they replaced the washer like piece for 10 bucks. Works fine now.68 Honda Cl350 (sold)

before you take the wheel apart, unscrew the cable from the speedo and see if you can pull the cable out. if you can and it's shorter than the cable housing, the cable snapped. that happened to me last year.'96 Kawasaki ZX11, bought February 5, 2015

?????speedometer quit ????
Hello fellow bikers of the big brute know as XS11.
My speedometer quit a few days ago after changing out the forks, took it a part again, and put back together,no speedo.Have checked it out top to axel its not the dash mount unit, nor the cable, could be the speedometer gearcase(that which the speedo cable is screwed to)but I belive its what thay refur to as "speedometer drive dog" ( the washer like pc. with the two little metal ears standing up @ 90 degrees. where is a good source for a replacement part? and could I have hurt the speedo gearcase also? any and all help greatly appreciated Duke

do the odometers still work? If they do but the speedo needle don't move, it ain't the drive that's bust, it's the speedo.
If nothing moves, take the drive cable off the speedo head, jack the front wheel off the ground and spin the front wheel.
If the speedo cable's square end spins round, again, it's the speedo.
If the cable don't spin, take the bottom end off to see if it's broken.
If the cable is broken you need a new one but first, stick a Robertson screwdriver into the speedo head and turn it to see if there's resistance.
The speedo should turn with little or no resistance.
If it drags the resistance will break the new cable too.
Most times, penetrating oil will free it up again.
If the cable is OK but it don't spin, the worm drive unit that plugs into the wheel is not working and needs to be fixed.Fred Hill, S'toon

If you have a reversable drill, chuck it up to the lower end of the cable, and spin it backwards. That is the correct rotation for the cable. It could also be the tabs on the drive that is in the front wheel hub. Sometimes they break, OR the notches in the speedo drive may not have been properly aligned with the tabs the last time the wheel was removed, and they have been bent over.
