  • Ammo-can Saddlebags

As promised, here are the a couple(admittedly cell-phone poor) pictures of the ammo-can saddlebags installed. They are much heaver than the 40mm long-n-lows I had on my last bike(*Edit* These are 20mm). I need to go to a three point mounting rather than two point like last time. Have to finish their paint, finish the mechanisms so they have locking lids and they're good to go. Also going to rig up some passenger floorboards.

Paint run on tank is intentional. Unfortunately you can't see the blood spatter on the skulls from there. Which coincidentally IS blood spatter. I chopped a nice hole in my finger while doing some electrical with my knife and thought it would be a nice touch :P.

    I digress. Here's a couple pictures.

looking good, I wanted to do that with a shadow I used to have....
My only suggestion would be that if your going to be re-working the mounting points for those cans, you may want to move them back a few inches, from the looks of it the front top corners may dig into a passengers legs, and they'd have little to no foot space....

I agree. Those are further forward than my Vetter bags, and SWMBO can't ride if I have my bags on because they sit too far forward. My son can, but he's a bean-pole.

I can't see the back side...no photo from that angle, but it looks like they are flush with the tail light, and so also perhaps the turn signals if they are mounted there...so he may not be able to move them farther back??

Perhaps he could position the passenger foot pegs a little more forward to clear the front edge of the bags?? Or if he plans on keeping the bags permanent vs. portable, then he could find a way to mount the turn signals to the back of the bags...and therefore be able to move them back a little bit? JAT!

And I think they look better than those ugly BMW boxxy ones I've seen.

Correct. I've JUST enough space to work the levers that remove the tops.

I'm aiming for a more permanent setup, rather than easy-on easy-off. For the interim I'm going to rock some very basic floorboards on the back. I don't generally ride passengers anyway, but these will come in handy when I do. The pegs would be pretty much impossible where they are. The peg on the other side is from a 650 maxim, which has a different mount, so that one is a couple inches forward from stock, but it's still unacceptable for the long term(Or really even the short term for any serious riding).

When winter hits(or sooner depending) I'm going to be reworking where and how the signals are mounted, and I will then be moving the bags back significantly farther. Right now the signals are mounted with right-angle metal pieces to the license plate bracket. Ghetto but serviceable. However I still BARELY have clearance.

Eventually I plan to make a second wall in the back of each bag. Then I will run electrical for LED's. Then each bag will have built in brake light/turn signals. Going to have to crack the math to see what's doable. I'll likely upgrade my charging system at the same time.

I've also got a bit of a wonky idea that I'm going to try to implement for rear suspension. Never seen anything like it, and I don't know if it's going to work, but I've got a parts bike that's going to be my guinea pig for the experiment. We'll see how it goes.
