  • Ignition coil recommendations?

I know there is a great page up about installing Dyna coils:

    http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread...ighlight=coils

And also some info on Accel coils:

    http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread...=&threadid=583

It sounds like either requires some hacking to get mounted properly - the Dynas need a bracket and the Accels need to be tied on (according to these directions).

I'm tempted to go with the Dynas simply for the nice pictures. =)

However, I seem to recall someone posting in some thread this summer about mounting some aftermarket coils with no special brackets or anything required. I obviously would prefer less work. Does anyone recall seeing (or saying) this?

I put the Dyna coils on with the only modification being drilling a hole through the metal core from the other side so the towers would point down instead of out when mounted. If you have a drill press it's no big deal and they mount easy as the stock ones. I have expreienced a dead spot between 1 - 2 K since then but I think it's a jet problem and not a coil problem.

Another no hassle way to fit dynacoils is to angle grind the circular steel petrol tank rubber holders (If you know what I mean) and use right angle connecters and boots for a perfect fit.

I got the Accels, yeah they did take some thinking on how to mount, but I managed after an hour

What I ended up doing was replacing 1 of the old coil mount bolts with a longer one, like 1/2 longer if I remember correctly and using that in the front mount hole, passing through an end of each coil.

Next, I used one of the stock, shorter coil mount bolts to mount the rear of my left coil to the stock frame mount. Next, I got two host clamps to finish mounting my right coil. I put one clamp on the coil, then snaked the second clamp through the first clamp, then mounted the second clamp to the frame and tightened the two clamps up. Haven't had a problem with them, they have stayed quite secure and I even had enough clearance to remove my heads without moving the coils.

The one down side is that I had to remove my horn, which I plan on remounting using a Special horn mounting bracket.

All right; thanks for the info, folks.

At Dennis Kirk, the Accels come with a kit including wires and plug caps, for $164:

While the Dynas do not for $143:

So with the Dynas I'd have to order up some plug caps and wires, and frankly I'm still pretty bewildered about the options there (i.e. supressive, resistor caps, blah blah). It would be nice to have it all in one kit, and probably for cheaper.

The Accels and Dynas really ought to be about the same performance-wise, right?

          Very helpful info, guys. Thanks!
