  • xs 1100 special gas milage

I assume when you guys are calculating your MPG you are using a full tank down to when the red service light comes on? Or are you waiting till it completely starts to die and you switch to reserve?
How big is the tank for the 79 special? I would love to get an idea how many is comparing after the rejet etc.

    Thanks for the info.

    Gary,

I always use my trip meter and reset it after every fill up. Then when you fill the tank back up, you have gallons of fuel used in the miles shown on the trip meter. Easy division from there. Works if you used half a tank, or half a gallon, or drained it dry.
Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

MPG is usually determined by filling the tank and resetting the trip odometer, then riding a while (somthing close to a full tank worth, light doesn't have to come on, but it's a good indicator). Then fiiling it up again to the same spot, and reading how many gallons you filled it with. Do the math, and you get your MPG for the tank of gas you just used.

Do you have a manual? The capacities and specifications are in the manual. You can download one from the link in my signature if you need it.

I fill my tank, and use the trip odometer as well. I average from 38 to 41 MPG, depending on how i ride.

I actually save every fuel receipt, and write the total mileage on each one. I use the trip odo to tell me how close to needing a fill-up I am (I usually fill up after about 70-80 miles). I have been getting 28-31 MPG, but I just installed a Dynojet kit this last weekend, and I'm only 30 miles or so into the first tank since I did that. I'm REALLY hoping that my mileage increased because of the kit. I know I feel a difference in the throttle response!

Gary - until you've got your motor setup and tuned correctly, you may be surprised at how much gas these things can suck down. When I first got Betsy running she was getting about 12-15 mpg. After a LOT of work she's up to around 30 mpg in city traffic, and over 44 on the highway.

I am assuming by UK gallon it means an imperial gallon. if so it is 1 Imperial gallon = 1.20095042 US gallons

I had the same reaction when I first looked at the table. Then I realized it was UK gallons, which means 30 mpg is more like 25 mpg for US gallons.

Oi! It's not much fun riding more than 100 miles anyway! Now that I've finally got mine to do 35-42 MPG now it's just not comfortable riding for 200 miles in the saddle. More tuning to come, maybe another seat.
