  • float adjustment on 81??

The floats on this bike are not the round brass floats but the flatter black ones. In setting the floats I discovered that all 4 were set at 23mm instead of the 27.7.
These carbs have never been taken apart so I am wondering whats up. Is 27.7 correct for the 81???

No, the 23 mm is the right setting (+ or - .5 mm). When reading the manuals, at least the Clymers, you need to check chapter 12 for changes in the 80-81 model years from the main chapters information. The initial chapters are based on the 78-79 models. Valve gaps are different as well. There is roughly twenty pages of info on the changes.

Tbell, check your fuel levels in each carb while running using short piece of tranparent fuel line(yellow tygen). Attach to nipple on bottom of carb, hold hose up beside carb and loosen seat screw to allow fuel to fill hose while its being held along side of carb. Book says 3mm down from bowl carb body for the 81's ONLY. That is too high! Set so fuel level is at bottom edge of bolt retaining bolt if you've changed phillips screws to allen head bolts. That fuel level WILL transfer to a close 27mm for static float level setting. Good running results may vary those settings ever so slightly depending on elevation, engine cond.,etc. Example: I'm at 5000ft.elev., dry arid cond., and for the most part, everything goes up from here. Stock intake and stock jetting cept for mains which are 110's all across, foam UniFilter, original stock exhaust and have fuel levels MATCHING heights in all carbs "running fuel level" is between bottom of allen head screws and line where bowls transition from flat/straight to outward angle. Hope that helps give you a starting place for the 81carbs. The 81carbs seem to be more sensitive to fuel level settings than the earlier carbs, so be a bit anal at getting them all the same! Can be a PITA getting them spot on, but once there hard to wipe the smile off.

I always go to back because there are a number of changes. If there are none mentioned then follow the rest of the manual. Works for me.

But! But! But! I have already re-adjusted them to 27. Sure glad I asked.

We try, if only earlier we'd be three hours or so of work savers. Unless you have not yet installed the carbs, then only an hour or less.
