Question about the 1st and 2nd gear fix??

    Question about the 1st and 2nd gear fix??

    Right now as I shift into 1st and then into 2nd it kind of rattles into gear as I push the lever. 3rd 4th and 5th are smooth as silk (other than it slipping under moderate accel). Is that rattling into gear signs of the gear problem? Or is that how these normally shifts?? I know they say it shifts like a Russian tractor but I have driven a lot of tractors in my days and I have never felt a shift like that (dont know if I have ever driven a Russian tractor thought i guess).

      Hay Nate.....you sound like your having the same problem as me.........its the dermal tool fix for you my friend! I'm about to undertake it myself!

          HEy Nate,

          The russian tractor thing typically refers to the fact the gears tend to "clunk" into place. You can feel and even hear from the next car the thing shift in about every gear. OR so I am told.

          The rattling is not the typical sign of the first, second issue. That typically shows up first under hard accelleration. then will eventually show up all the time, but as opposed to a rattle, it will feel like machine gun going off under you as the dogs slip to the next slot in the gears.

          If you have not seen how these work, here are some pics of first and second gears involved....

          1 st gear "slots" more like shelfs....


          Dogs on 4th that slip into those shelfs.....


          Slots in second......


          Dogs in 5th that slide into the second gear slots.....


          As you can see, there is a spacing within the slots for the dogs to move back and forth. Depending on speed and rpm, it is possible they are rattling back and forth I suppose. Most likely is your just describing the "experience" of the 1st second gear issues differently.

              Does it just rattle as it goes in or while accelerating? If it's just going in, that's pretty normal, and I've driven a few tractors and none of them shifted as bad as these things do. I'm guessing the russian ones are worse, but these are pretty clunky. I think the Russian tractor term was coined by Fredintoon, who may have actually driven a Russian tractor. That said, I have found that good throttle control makes it much better. As a matter of fact, once I got to where I could smoothly shift without the clutch, the shifting with the clutch doesn't make noise any more (unless there is a pretty girl in a convertible next to me, in which case the next gear is SURE to be missed with the resulting revving of the engine.)

                  It only does it when I am shifting. It does not do anything when I am in gear.
