With some help from these forums, and my Clymer manual, I've solved a bunch of weird headlight behavior. The symptoms:
- hi and low-beam were backwards
- the headlight failure indicator was lit all the time
- eventually, both hi and low-beam failed
- wiring out the reserve lighting unit DID NOT WORK
I cleaned the connections for the reserve lighting unit and the relay and it didn't help. I tested everything I could think of and still no luck.
The solution turned out to be simple - too simple. There's a six-wire connector under the tank, near the coils that leads to the left handle-bar switch. One connector, for the Blue-Green wire, was bad. Once cleaned, everything worked again.
Like it's said in many other posts, clean the connections before checking anything else. No I know that includes connections along the way too...
