  • Hidden ignition switch

So I bought my XJ with the classic "screwdriver ignition" and gas cap and sadly it looks like the parts are hard to come by. Has anybody wired up a generic ignition switch and a hidden starter button??

I am open to ideas if you have them.
    Thanks!

Here is a link for an ignition switch scroll down towards the bottom:

You can find the parts sometimes it just takes a bit to find them. Lots of people seem to always be parting out the bikes on ebay as well.

I bypassed my faulty ignition switch with a toggle mounted to the frame just behind the right side cover. the wiring is done right there at the fuse box and fully un-doable should I ever choose to get a new switch. The starter button works normally, and to get the lighting circuit powered up I unplugged the OE switch and installed a jumper in the plug, again fully reversable. Now I have a great place to stick a clock! (right on the old switch).
You can find wiring schemeatics right here at this site> Good luck.

I do NOT have an XJ, so I'm not sure, but it MAY be the same as some later model bikes. Check the UK site for the parts interchange, and you may find you can still get a new switch. A locksmith CAN rekey almost anything, so you should be able to "fix" any other lock you need to.
