is there an easy way to make the fuel mixture lean, without tearing the carbs apart. i think i have prepared myself enough, by reading everything on the site, and the manual a few times to tear the carbs apart this winter, but i actually want to ride it this summer....and if i take them off now, between the kids and the job and the wife, and the new one on the way, i'll never get it done in time to actually ride my bike. please tell me there is a lean mixture screw somewhere that i can get to without losing my bike for the summer. please...... i read the manual, but didn't see anything, just hoping i missed it... the idle is fine, but the mixture is way way WAY to rich.

What condition is your air filter in? A free flowing air filter will lean out the mixture some. A dirty air filter will richen it.
BTW, cleaning your carbs is an afternoon project, not a long-term ordeal.

Its not that hard. I pulled the carbs and cleaned them a couple weeks ago for the first time ever. Total time I spent on them from removal to reinstal and sync was maybe 3 1/2 to maybe 5 hours max (I wasn't really timing myself). Are there any other XSers around you that could maybe offer you some help if you need it?Nathan

The carbs on these bikes really aren't that hard to do. I would suggest getting the rebuild kits prior to doing it in case you find you need them once you have them apart.Harry

Hey Rstyduck,
First of all, did you make a mistake when you registered..did you want your username to say "RUSTYDUCK"?? I can edit/correct it if you did, just PM me.
Secondly, there's LOTS of info on this site if you'll take a look around, like the TECH TIPS...several different forums...including LINKS...where you can find info about where to source parts.
http://www.z1enterprises.com/ is one that provides compete carb kits,
however most folks don't need anywhere near a complete kit, mostly the gaskets and float needles and seat O-rings....if you have the later model carbs, etc.. Clutch parts can be gotten from www.partsnmore.com as well as others....$5.00 a friction plate..you need 8.
Doing a search in the tech discussion will usually reveal lots of threads, use more word to narrow down results.
1stBike, sorry, no easy overall leaning dial! The pilot screws can lean out the pilot circuit, but won't affect the mains...much. However, many folks ride in the lower rpms and that's where the pilot screws can provide the most affect to lean things out.
If your plugs are black/sooty after a proper upper rpm throttle chop technique, then the mains are probably too large, but several other factors can cause problems too. As pointed out, clogged filter, clogged or restricted exhaust, missing pilot jet tower plugs on the early model carbs, incorrect float height setting, etc.!

typically, the plugs over the pilot jet were in the 78-79 models. There was an early model issue of the 80 model with the new style carbs as far as mixture screw tower and such that actually still have the crossover feed to the pilot from the main and require the plug/cap. I have seen one set of these.
Like TC stated, the carbs can be leaned out some with the mixture screws. But really, removing the carbs and cleaning them is not an all week job unless you screw something up like get in a hurry and try to use an extractor that breaks off in your mixture screw. DAMHIKIJK.

if you've never done it before, an afternoon is real hopeful.
Once you get practiced, an afternoon is quite doable and you'll even be able to slide back the stock airbox without screaming as you bark your knuckles. And once you start screaming, there went nap-time, right?Fred Hill, S'toon

Hey 1st....i think you told me, but where at in Indiana are you? the carbs like everyone else has stated, are not that tough....if the idle mix screws havent been touched by a PO, they may be still covered....and have to be drilled out to get to them.....relatively easy, just gotta be careful.'81H (my first XS ) "Grey Ghost"
