quite a day today. My wife say's I'm like a dog on a bone when something doesn't work as it should. This bike is no different. So I stripped it down again today and started playng with the carbs. All the passages are spotless and the jets and tubes still have all the shine I put on them with brasso. All holes are clean. I rechecked my float heights and all were dead on. Sat and had a beer and thought about the feed back i've got from you guy's. Went into town and scoured all the automotive and plumbing shops for a fitting that would fit into the bottom of the float bowls. Finally found a brake bleeder that would fit. Tried it out and checked the float levels manualy on a bench. Christ I had no hope of ever getting this right. The floats bottom out before the fuel hits the proper height. Contacting the air jet passage well before they hit the proper level. No wonder adjusting the mixture screws did nothing. These new plastic floats were supposed to be compatable but i guess not. I'm going to see if I can find four good brass floats from the stuff I have on hand. Not being a mechanic I tend to take things literally. The book says 25.7 Thats what they were. Unfortunately that only works if the floats are correct. I ordered the right ones and installed what i got. Who knew. Anyway both me and my shop smell like gas so I'm going to shower and have something to eat and I'll get back to you with tommorrows progress.

And the good news......
is now you found an issue that can be fixed instead of poking around in the dark, like is the case initially. The float thing with the tubes---I swear by it. Mine didn't even set close to what they should have been. All were different. Little time consuming, but well worth it. And the more you mess with these things, the easier it gets. Lots of guys on here with a lot of experience you won't find anywhere else. (Luckily for me, too!).
Take your time with the float settings with the tubes, then double double check them. Youi'll be good to go.
FYI- the thread for the my bowls was 8mmx1.0....the zerks fit 1/4'' tubing.1980 xs 11 special

I have to ask just to make sure .... The floats are installed the right way round eh? I have seen them reversed when folks forget that the carbs are upside down when working in the bowls. They should not be able to contact anything in the bowls? When the carbs are upside down on the bench, the actual floats go down into the carb bodies.

Yes Rob they are in the right way. Was your advise that actually made me go and find the fittings and check manually. I'd run off a copy of your carb cleaning method several months ago but lost it in the shop. Found it again and re-read it. Big help in finding the problem.mack
