Screw Up?

I was polishing parts on my bike, having a great time and a couple beers. started to pull this part and found it didnt feel right, did i screw up! it wont go back in place. what did i do...?

Okay, now were getting somewhere. Thats the end cover for your starter motor, but to get it off you have to undo the screws on the other end of the starter. Did you try to remove the starter? If you did then you most likley dont have the starter gear seated properly on the sprag clutch. Try pulling it back out and re-seating it.

Hey, just a thought, but you do know that theres a bolt that holds that end up, dont you?. If you don't, It goes through the hole just up and to the left of the arrow, and through the bracket in the end cap.

i wanted to pull that cover off, and it didnt come off easily, can i still pull it off and get it back on OK?

You cant take the cover off without removing the starter motor. It's screwed on with the two screws that run the length of the starter. To get the starter out you have to remove the three bolts on the cover on the top and then pull the motor to the left to disengage the gears. If you've managed to remove the cover without removing the bolts then you might have a minor issue on your hands in the form of stripped threads on the end plate.

If you get a Clymers manual, page 59, steps 18 and 19 describe removal methods.

On my 81 model, the only thing holding the starter in is the one bolt in the cover that Brian mentioned. The one you can see in the picture. Maybe the other two cover bolts or the cover do something to hold it, but they do not go through it in any locations.

The starter motor has a sealing O-ring on the opposite end from the one pictured where it enters the engine and the gear meshes with the rest of the starter equipment. The only issues I forsee with trying to pull it out without removing the cover and such is what happened to the wires to the motor? You could be pinching them or cutting into them. I am also not certain if that o-ring will seal up decently if you re-use it.

Just looked at mine and your correct but you have to remove the cover to get the starter out, and Jomur will probably have to remove it to get the starter seated properly again.

I could see where that would be true Brian. I have never tried the route jomur is taking myself

I actually just pulled the starter off Thunderstrucks engine Sunday, I was thinking of swithing that cover plate with the one on Banshee, but I do not want to toy around with pulling the starter off Banshee and risk an oil leak.

Thanks guys, I just panicked because i had a ride planned this morning. but once brian mentioned it was the starter motor, i went out and put the bike in gear and rocked it back and forth a little till it engaed and would seat again. you guys are great, thanks again..!
