  • Elanor needs more help...

ok guys, after getting a few miles on her, I've got a couple more issues.
    1) I'm pretty sure my starter clutch is really taking a crap on me. It starts just fine but i dont think its letting go once the engine is started. Once and awhile when i shut the bike off i can hear the clutch spinning for a second. I've got another clutch sitting on the shelf but I just got on the road, and i dont really want to tear the thing apart again. So question here is, will this do any harm other than just burning up the starter clutch? could i give it a shot of gear oil or anti seize as a band aid?
    2) When its cold with the enricher pulled out the engine will start to idol up then randomly pop out of carb #2 and nearly kill the idol.
    3) pipes 1 & 2 seem to run colder than 3 & 4.
    4) When i wind up the engine it takes a few seconds for the engine to idol back down. I know the throttle isnt sticking but other than that I have no idea here
    5) once up to temp and under load the low end power isn't there anymore...

If it helps she seemed to run better, idol and mid-top end with less back pressure before i put the HD mufflers on.

Sorry for the long thread but this is the first year I've had her out on the road for any amount of time, and its my first bike

Thanks again guys, you've been life savers

My guess is you need to retune and maybe rejet. First though, have you resynched the carbs since all this work? That would be my first stop on the path.

i had a question on the carb rejet. If you take your stock air box or, or it was all broke up and replaced it with the pod type filters, do you have to rejet, and if so what to?

I've got the stock air box, I've done a bench sync recently, but i dont currently have access to vacuum gauges to get a proper sync. I've done a tune by ear but it probably wouldnt hurt to go over that again. I dont know what jets are in the carbs. If i had to guess i'd say stock or a size up from it. The po put pipes on that are a bit bigger (the collectors are 2in OD) To be honest the carbs are really a mystery to me. I haven't had the courage to pull the carbs apart yet. I understand the basics but thats about it. I bought the bike for $350 as a running project and that is 100% what she is. Really its my first "Big boy toy"

          Hey Freak,

The starter clutch is down in the engine. It can get stuck and then continue to spin the starter motor, and that could burn up the starter motor bearings! The starter clutch pinch rollers could be binding and so not releasing their grip once the engine is started!? Fixing it involves splitting the cases...not my idea of fun! I didn't look/check to see what model/year your bike is, so I don't know if you have the kick starter? I was going to suggest removing the starter motor and then either kick or push start the bike, and then observe the starter motor to clutch gear to see if you can see it continuing to spin...it's not supposed to keep spinning IF the clutch is releasing it's grip on the crank after starting.

As for the running, you need to resynchronize the carbs, and may need to richen up the pilot circuit, and possibly the mains depending on your plug color and such. Out of synch and lean can both cause hanging or fluctuating idles.

Griger, there's a rejetting guide in the MISC tips section that you can follow to get started on your rejetting options. Indy filters/pods do allow more flow and could lean things a bit, you may be able to get by with turning the pilot screws out more, but plug color will tell the full story.
