  • new used carbs, what is this?

Hey guys I just got back from the MC junk yard and the guy sais these were from an 80 1100, mine didn't have this device.
can anyone tell me what it is and does, is it from an 80 + ?

    Will they work with this?

I paid $100 for them and so far I took one bowl off and they dont look too bad, some griany looking grit fell out kinda looks like saw dust if it is in the next one I will take a picture of it.

Here is a link to the picture with a yellow circle around the device.

Yeah, that's an octopus - those carbs are from a Special.

        Thanks guys

from what I have read, I dont need this as long as I shut off the petcock to keep the fuel from leaking.

this does not conferm that these carbs are from a 80 or newer correct?

im going out to the garage to start tearing them down and see what I got for my $$$.

any way to tell what year they cam off from?
        JYD said an 80 but....?

Easy enough way, when you have the bowls off, look at the float valve - is it bolt in (hextype) or pushed in and held by a bracket? Bracket=80/81, bolt in is 78/79

Just looking at the chrome cap on #1, and the recessed pilot screws, I'd say those are 'later model' carbs. I wouldn't put a lot of money on whether they're '80 or '81, but they're not 'early' carbs.

thats what I wanted to here , they are the knock the pin out dont break off the post kind and I hope I have as much luck as the last time, OH except when I got to the pilot jets LOL
Damn that is why im doing this now.

ok here we go..... I love you guys .. ask a queston and get a GOOD answer we will have to all party someday.

Can I mix and match things like bowl, top (chrome), slides, Diafram, well what can I not use?

The parts on the original are good except for the body and pilot jets, both 1 and 3.

I guess I need to get these apart and see what I have, maybe they have different jets or something better, I will picture all parts and maybe Ya'll can tell me what and how to go bouts doin this.

Cool thanks I will check in offten

anyone have toll free calling may feel free to give me a call (dont wake my baby up) or I can call you, (I have free LD) I want to fire this thing up ....Im getting excited now.

There's not much that will interchange between early carbs and later carbs. The bowls are different, the tops are different, the floats are different, the slides are different, the pilot screws are different, and on it goes. You can swap out one whole bank for another, but sorry, there's not much opportunity to mix and match.

                  OK now im bummed.

Took the bowls off and found that piolt jets 1 & 3 are all bugerd up and 2 & 4 are not too good either.

the $100 set has turned out to be not very good.

I sure am hopeing that if I take my time I can make something work.
oh and one of dem dere posts is broken already (#1) I can fix that, float valves are stuck like the bike was leaning(kickstand) .

These carbs have been worked on quite abit judgeing by the number of bugerd up screws. Im going to have to wait to get a impact driver befor I realy mess things up.

                  Bummer going to bed :-(

Ken Thanks for the fast reply.

I have an 80G and you guys are saying that these must be 80 + will they interchange at all? The JYD said they are from an 80.

                    I hope so.

                    Thanks

If your bike is actually an '80 (i.e. not just a '79 that didn't sell, and got registered as an '80 later) you should be able to interchange most parts back and forth between your original carbs and your junkyard set. With any luck, you will have enough pieces to make one good set.

Like you said, take your time with this, get an impact driver before you try to work on stuck jets, and you shold be okay. Another thing you might want to think about is using a fine burr in a dremel tool to form new slots in damaged jets before you try removing them. I've done this a few times and been able to re-use what first looked like completely messed-up jets.

was just doing some carb research and was wondering how you did with your carbs. know where a set is if you still need them. guy had 3 sets in a box when I bought my spare set to tinker with while still riding the bike. Guy used to put the engines in midget racers and had some dusty ones. He has one set off of an e or f model and one set that had a different shape to the bottom of them. they were really dusty and mine had some old smelly gas come out when I turner them over. they were supposed to be off a running bike. I'm not sure how good they actually are because I have not tore them apart but my set and the other 2 the guy had did not have any screws that even looked like they had ever been turned. In other words no stripped or buggered up screws. I used to live in garland. over buy the whataburger close to northwest hwy and 67 way back in the 80's back when Our bikes were new. That is wher ethe friend of mine that had a MNS lived also. I always wanted an 1100 ever since then.
