  • Route 66 maps, info etc, experience.

Ok, I am interested in riding some of the old Mother Road and am wondering if anyone has done it, or has some maps of the Route or other info. It has always intrigued me, ever since two fellas in an early Corvette cruised it. (Old farts will know exactly what I'm talkin' about) :-) So speak up, can I drive my XS on the 66 and stay in some old motels and eat at greasy spoons??

A freind of Ron Lymans and his dad took that trip earlier this year, I will see if Ron can relay your request. They are both Ontario natives.

Thanks Gary, that would be great. Nobody has bit yet about the two guys and the corvette though. :-)

          I'll bite:

but what I'm really curious about is, how do you get spousal dispensation for such an adventure? Take her with, in car?

Well done Mike! now what was the name of the show and the two guys??
BTW, the wife would be coming along, it is intriguing for her as well.

Martin Milner (blonde) and George Maharris (black hair) (spelling may not be correct) in series "Route 66" (I think.) Song of the same name has been recorded by many groups, but you most often hear the Manhattan Transfer version. I have it on the "Anthology" cd collection.

Thanks Pat, will be happy to stop by. We're making tentative plans right now to do it 2 summers from now, next summer we'll be in the U.K. where my wife is from, but when we do come down, I'll be sure to stop in for coffee! Take care.

I've always been intrigued by the trip on rt 66, I will be trying to do it over two summers, if possible, in the next two years. I figure four weeks total. If my health holds up, I will retire in a year and 1/2. It will be a short retirement as I am only 48 yrs old. too young to retire for good. Later 'Dog

I've never looked at where Rt. 66 wanders. Does it go through Colorado? Might be a cool route for CA XSives as a group heading to the CO rally next summer.

Rt. 66 is a little farther south....try Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Arizona.

"Oklahoma City looks mighty pretty, Gallup, New Mexico. Flagstaff, Arizona, (Don't forget Winona) *just east of Flagstaff* Kingman, Barstow, San Bernadino....."

I've ridden much of the route from Chicago. In many places (where it still exists at all) it is just fragments or a 'frontage road' to I-40. Still a few areas where it is marked as a "Historic Byway". More of it here in the west than in the mid-west and plains. I've not ridden it into California so don't know how much of it has survived there.

While I like riding back roads and state highways, Rt. 66 is far from continious and in many places the segments dead-end, forcing a return to other routes. If you plan to ride it make sure you are not in a hurry!

I just got off old 66 coming home from Tulsa in the roller skate Sunday night. It's a great trip and runs right through Oklahoma City and Tulsa and yeah, there are some greasy spoons on the way! Good BBQ, too. There are plenty of places to stay and some books to be had (and 66 newspapers with ads, etc) about the route and where the "Old" part of the road deviates from the current one.
When I was a little shaver we traveled it all the way from Texas to California several summers. Hotter N Hell for sure that time o year.
