  • blind plugs on the intake adapters splitting

I was wondering if anyone had a substitute for the blind plugs found on MikesXS. I seem to have to replace these buggers on a regular basis because they split. I just installed 4 new ones about three weeks ago and TWO have already split!!! I usually fill the split with High temp RTV but just the same it is irritating to have to repair this things so often. If I don't then I run lean on that cylinder.

I have a 1980 XS1100SG if that makes a difference. I have checked all over the forum and it seems everyone uses rubber blind plugs, I was hoping there was an alternative that won't break and doesn't look like someone jury-rigged it with spare parts. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Are you talking about the rubber plugs that seal off the sync ports on the intake boots?
After sych-ing the carbs, I connect the nipples on carbs one and four together with some 3/16 fuel line. Same with ports 2 and 3...
It's like a dumbed down YICS mod...

After balancing the carbs, toss in some T-connectors and tube to the vacuum fittings and you will find that your bike will idle smoother...

Isn't that kind of like making your own YICS? Interesting idea - might have to give it a try.

On the blind plugs, +1 for the auto parts store. I get a package of 5 at Advance Autoparts for about $2.
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

                  hey doug,
it is using the same principle as the yics
system, i figure it can only be a benefit to help
                  balance the carbs.

What I find very interesting about this discussion, is that almost all of the XJ owners look for ways to eliminate the YICS. Thus the YICS Eliminator created by one of our own members. And most of them look for a design they can leave in place after tuning.

                      i found that interesting too,
i dont see any disadvantages of having it connected,
and the possibility that it could help keep the carbys
balanced cant be a bad thing.

It would be interesting to see what difference this plumbing makes in the sync at higher rpms. Carbs are synced at idle, but if you watch the gauges, you notice that the sync usually doesn't stay even as the rpms rise. It would be interesting to see what kind of a difference this makes in the sync at elevated rpms - I'm thinkin' it should stay more even. You'd think it would make a sync 'last' longer too. One way to find out....

I've tried hooking all 4 carb vacuum nipples together and I found the bike ran worse that way. Took them right off and went back to the blind plugs. YMMV

Carb sync should last a very long time unless your always messing with your carbs. I check my sync every time I tune up and after original set up, I have not had to readjust.

If you check with your auto parts store for these vac. caps, you will find that some of them have caps that are about as heavy as the originals. Most of what you find are wimpy thin caps. I think it is Echlin that has heavy ones.
