    Stock exhaust

    Does anyone know where I could find another stock exhaust (or aftermarket replica) for my 79 Standard? I have looked into the traditional aftermarket pipes (MAC and Jardine) and I like the look of the stock exhaust (long megaphone) much better.

    I have been checking the local salvage yards with no luck.

    Finding a stock exhaust in decent condition for a 20+ year old motorcycle is very hard. Every now and then, a set will show up on Ebay, or sometimes even just one side or the other. Then it becomes a matter of how badly you want it and how deep your pockets are

      Got mine made... a custom hommade original replica 1. attempt. Will post some more pics with the exhausts on the bike, till then theres a thread with some pics of the mentioned exhausts here. Mufflers and baffels or sth.

        OK, some copy-paste stuff from my previous posts:

        Material for building my own 4-2 exhaust system cost me bout 30$:

        A piece of thin walled pipe for the pipes, I didn't get 38mm ones, so 40 should do it. Im using old headers here since they're not the problem.

        A piece of 30mm pipe for the silencers... drilled a lot of holes (6mm) in there so I'll have 3 compartments in each muffler. Drilling takes time and... beer.

        A steel sheet for the pots. I cut em out to size and took em to a guy who makes exhausts to roll em, but he screwed up, so we did it by hand... a large diameter pipe and a rubber hammer.
        Another few circles were cut out to act as compartment walls inside the muffler.

        1,5 kg aluminium piece for the end thingies that close the mufflers.

        Another 20$ for getting the aluminium ends drilled to a nice coned shape.

        Next some welding of the silencers and compartment walls... the whole assy. should slide into the pot. and since the pots are cone shaped, it should hold em there, then fixed permanently with the aluminium pieces at the end.

        Get the pipes bent, welded, everything polished and chromed.

        So max. another 100$ for polishing (not doing that myself, no time) and chroming of the whole thing.... and viola... new exhaust system... will post pics when everything is complete.

        OK... finally some pics of the home-made exhaust system for the 78 XS11. The pics are a bit dark, but it was cheaper to borrow a friend with a dig. camera than getiing my own.

        Here are the components...
        The assembled pot on the left and disassembled one on the right. Muffler thingie is the ugliest thing on the pic. Cant miss it. The end cap is turned so you can see the back side. OK, cant see much, but there it is.




        OK, this one is from the back... Theres a groove drilled on the endcap so the muffler-thingie can slide in and the end cap holds it in place at the back. The gray area inside the pot is temp. resistant paint. It should start rusting a bit later I hope.



        Here are the header pipes. Just being painted with the temp. resistant paint. The top pipes are original and you can see where they were welded to the new pipes. The original material was weird and it didn't weld nicely, so I couldn't polish it to have it chromed.



        Just so you see it can be done. It take some time and work, but it can be done.

          Stock exhaust

          i used a pair of 80 model night hawk mufflers off a wreked bike on mine and used the stock headers. i had to make new mounts but it gives the bike a nice sound. i think

            The stock exhaust was broken on the Mongrel as is typical on specials. I used a set of stock headers from a standard and cut the rotted mufflers left about 4” off the back of the pipe. I slit the muffler stub and then reduced the diameter with a hammer and a steel rod to match the inside diameter of a pair of Harley Sportster mufflers. It sounds good and isn’t loud. The shorty HD mufflers look good too. Best of all the mufflers only cost me 20 bucks.

              Cheap mufflers

              When my 80g mufflers gave it up, I got a pair of the "extra long" mufflers from JC Whitney. They went on easy, had to get rid of the cross-over and "refab" the rear brackets. The more I ride it , the mellower it gets, no jetting problems so far. These mufflers are 27 inches long and look stock (those around me who are not well versed in XS11 never noticed), they make a slightly shorter muffler that would allow removal of the rear wheel without all the normal hoopla. I gotta get some pictures posted of this fix, it was cheap and turned out very nice.

                whitney replacements

                thanks for the review on the whitney aftermarkets. i've been waiting to hear from someone who has tried them. the slip ons of my xj have had it, but the headers are in good shape. plus i want to the the 4 into 2 style. so the aftermarkets would work. anyone else had any experience with the jc whits.

                  I found this guy that will make a a pretty close match set out of stainless and there are pics on his site.
                  I think that after you add shipping and all they are kind of pricey.

                    Hello,
                    We also have a lot of difficulties to find origonal stock exhaust, but I found last year 1 set brend new.
                    As it's hard, we decided to produce adaptable exhaust, using Sito mufflers and his "H" pipe (in chrome plated steel) and with stainless pipes made with the original design.
                    Sito elements are still available.
                    I can send an picture with the Sito and stainless pipes, comparatively to the stock element.
