Hey Wolf,
Check out the tech tips, and search for CHAIN DRIVE, there's 2 ways to do it, cheaply, or costly! XSChop makes a great conversion box, but it'll cost you. Or you can get a good quality metal band saw and cut up your middle drive unit yourself.
The next question is why you want a chain drive? Bigger back tire? It's been discussed that it will provide more ponies to the rear tire, but at what cost!! Lots more maintanence involved, etc.!
Just asking.

Hi Wolf and welcome,
XSchop is your chain drive conversion wizard.
Hit "search". Type in "chain drive". Look for 20 pages of posts under XSchop's posting.Fred Hill, S'toon

Why would you want to do this?It is a cool conversion no doubt but the cost factor would weigh heavy on me.I like the ease of the shaft drive, chains can be a pain in the neck but if there is a conversion that could use a chain that can be readily available to replace-go for it.1980 XS1100 SG

Cool-years ago i read in Cycle world magazine that they took a Kawasaki Eliminator and put a chain drive unit on and was able to put a wider tire on it.Of course a lot of custom parts were made but it worked.1980 XS1100 SG

One other downside to a chain conversion is short chain life, as all I've seen use rather small front sprockets due to clearance issues.

xschop's chaindrive conversion allows up to a 220 rear tire just by notching the frame for the chain path.....If you hard tail the xs11 and stick on an offset sprocket a Venom 300 rear can be done......

Chaindrive
I took advantage of xschops chaindrive and I love it. Sure it was a bit pricey bit the quality was phenominal.
I have some shots under listed under "chaindrive on this forum it will be on the road this riding season.
