I am building a third one of these beautiful old bikes. I am going to do a lot of custom work on it though. My quetion is "Are there any tree and fork set ups fromother bikes and years that are a direct mate up?" I would like to use newer forks on this build up.

Try a search, someone is running busa forks, supposed to be a direct swap if you get a new bearing(s) if I remember correctly. Guys in Europe are using some sort of forks that are supposed to be easy to swap too, but I can't remember the bike their off of, seems like it wasn't available over here. Others are using FJ1100 forks, which are supposed to swap, but aren't bolt on, some mods and/or spacers need to be machined. I'm planning to do FJ forks....theres a thread.1979 xs1100 Special -

Most of the sport bike forks are designed for a 'longer' steering neck, and axle/wheel/brake differences means none of these are a 'bolt-on' deal. You will be fabricating some parts, if only for mounting a headlight. Watch out for bar size too (7/8" vs 1"), as this will affect your hand controls.

I knew a little fab would be needed, I just wanted the neck and triple to line up and sit the bike correct. Appreciate the advice though.1978 XS1100e Satin black untill I can afford some pearlescent red paint from house of color.

[QUOTE=vileneeds;285278]...and sit the bike correct...[QUOTE]
That is the trick. Nearly all the fork swaps you see involve forks off sport bikes, and they'll almost always lower the front of the bike. I went through considerable work to maintain stock height on mine with the FJ forks, and stayed within about 1/4 inch of stock. Lowering the front will decrease trail (all else being equal) making for a 'quicker' steering bike but increasing the chances of having a 'tank slapper'. But most sport bike trees have less offset (which increases trail) so you need to check.
