  • Holes drilled in my exhaust :-O

So I have had this bike for about 2 months, haven't really been able to drive it yet due to a really bad stumble between about 1500 - 5000 RPM. This past weekend I pulled the carbs off cleaned/bench synced and then put them back on. I tried to sync the carbs but I couldn't really get it, but even with the carbs not perfect the bike ran 100X better than it did, no more stumbling. I don't really know what I am doing so it could either be that or it could be because of three little 1/8 inch holes that one of the PO's had drilled in the end of the right side exhaust pipe.

So after I put the bike back together I bought some high heat epoxy putty and I filled in the holes in the right exhaust (I also changed the fuel filters but I don't think that is my problem) and now when I took the bike out to ride it the stumble is back.

My question is can those three little holes make that much of a difference to bring that stumble back or should I go back and look at something else.

    Thanks in advance!

Hmmm .... is this a factory exhaust? IIRC, a factory Special exhaust has an eighth inch hole in the pipe just before the muffler as a condensation drain ...

What problem did you encounter syncing the carbs? If they are out, it could definitely contribute to a stumbling issue. Three drilled holes in your exhaust I doubt would throw it off so much that it would run like crap. What do your plugs look like?

Its more just the fact that I don't really know what I am doing, when I am doing the sync.

              Hi Nathan,
syncing the carbs isnt to hard, would be easier if someone
can show you if not and your using vac guages,

              heres what to do
1st you want to callibrate the guages,
i do this by removing one of the carb inlet rubbers
and attaching the guages 1 at a time, you want the guages
to read the same, adj is made by removing the lens cover and adj
the small screw on the face plate.
              once the guages are calibrated
connect the 4 tubes to the 4 inlet rubbers,
and adj the dampers to prevent the needles from jumping xsecively,
then adj carbies using the sync srcews you used to do the bench sync,
1 and 2 then 4 to 3, then adj the left bank to the right bank and your done.
