  • Alternitive to K&L petcock kits?

Does anyone know if there is any other manufacturer for standard petcock kits besides K&L? All the ones I've seen have been K&L brand.

I bought K&L kits about 2 months ago, installed them and then last weekend at the rally discovered that I had no reserve. Today I pulled the petcocks apart and found that the K&L rubbers have swelled a large amount, and the "disk" part had torn (due to being too big) and was causing the petcock to flow gas from the "reserve" tube in all positions.

I'm waiting on a response from the company I purchesed the kits through, but I'd rather not use K&L again if there is an alternitive....

Here you can see that the seals have swelled so much that the petcocks can not be put back together.

Here is the torn disks, they were very very soft and already torn when I removed them.

New next to stock, stock is on right, the new has gotten much bigger

New disk behind old (stock) one, you can see the new disk is much larger..

Just for clarification, I believe you intended to state the petcock kit for a Special model petcock. looking at the lever and the four way disc that seems like a special petcock.

Looks like a Standard petcock lever to me, notice the stops to limit it to only 3 positions. Georgefix on ebay sells some parts for these, but he does not say what the brand is. By looking at those pics, were you running any kind of fuel additive? Gas should not swell those up like that.

Nope, I meant standard petcocks, they are off an 81 venture tank, same as all the other "standard" petcocks I've seen.

I got these kits from Georgefix, I've had good luck with other parts I've gotten from him, he sells K&L stuff, everything I've gotten from him has been K&L brand. Just a plug for george, I sent him an e-mail this morning explaining the problem and showing him the pictures, he responded to send the kits back and he'll replace them free of charge. Thats good service, no questions asked.

I have not been running any additives, just regular old 87 pump gas, although it is all actually 10% ethanol, at least here where I live.

Hey Brian I just put in a set of the k and l in my venture tank for the rally as well and mine seem to work perfectly I got mine from George too it must just be a bad set. Also did you check your filter towers if they are bad your reserve wont be there either

Towers are fine, I'm sure my lack of reserve was because the gas was leaking past that disk seal, so in essence all positions were "reserve". I guess I'll try another set, doesn't seem to be any other alternitive, not sure why mine got all big and soft.
