coil pick up assembly

hey there!!
does anyone know where i can get a new pick up assembly for a 79 special?? the one in mine has been repaired before by the PO and needs it again, but i'm thinking i might as well replace it if i can find one. also i'm looking for some mufflers for my bike any ideas on that would be greatly apreciated!!
you folks are great and i'm having a lot of fun with this bike!!

Coil Pickup & Mufflers

Hey Tony,
Like Strom said...E-bay is a great place to bargain hunt...but pay attention! coils are electrical parts and generally NOBODY guarantees them..there a a few exceptions.
Now for the mufflers... you will hear many different opinions about this one...so take a moment to evaluate your needs...do you live in an Apartment? can your neighbors tolerate 4 Tigers growling at 6:15 am? do you want a 4-into-1 system...do you want to retain your centerstand...do you have saddlebags... Most good quality exhaust systems reqiure a minimum of ability to install...others reuire major surgery by a qualified mechanic/fabricator/Brain Surgeon you may want to consider "slip ons" IE; keep your stock head pipes...and replace the mufflers only...
Remember, some systems work well with the stock air filer...some don't...most require that you "re-sync" the Carbs or suffer a "performance loss" due to the change in air volume
Then there's PRICE It goes like this...first, there's a guy in ENGLAND who will make you a set of stainless steel pipes that closly resembles the stock unit...for about $1200 and everything goes down from there...I've found complete sets at M.C. salvage yards for $160.00 (NEW!!)
So the longer you spend looking...the better the price will get...and you may (if you're LUCKY) get the system you REALLY want the First time
MAC systems are the "loudest"...the Jardine "slip ons" seem to be the "favorite" for those who want "slip ons"...Check the thread (here) on putting on "Harley cans" and if you know a good welder...the SKY's the limit...Huh Denny
Anyhow...take your time...and remember you can sell most mistakes on E-bay

Hey Tony,

Ebay is the best I think, but if there isn't one there, you may look at the links section of this site. I posted another web site that allows you to submit a parts request to salvage yards all over the US. Just tell them that the coils must be known good measuring between 510 and 800 ohms. I think thats right. It's free to join, and they email you with a price quote. I got at least a half dozen replies for the same part.

Yamaha makes a replacement assy for the pick-up coils. They recognized that there was a problem and and redesigned them. Not sure if you can still get the replacement but I think you can.

If your headers are in fair shape, there is a very good article on installing HD fatboy mufflers on your bike, on the site. Search for "Fat boy mufflers". I used this with great results, and low cost. However i am aware some people do not have my limited budget, there are some good replacements out there. Go to JCWhitney.com or, there are also some good threads here regaring this subject search "mufflers".

thanks for the info!!! i checked with my local dealer and they can still order the part for me for about $100.00 i think i'm going to check a few more places to see if i can find it cheaper tho!!!

i am thinking of using a pair of fish tail harley mufflers that a buddy of mine has, they are still in the box and he doesn't want much for them.

I have a pair of 1200 Sportster mufflers on the Mongrel. I also have a pair of tourglide mufflers that I bought just in case the Sportster mufflers were too loud. So far the Sportster mufflers are fine. I got both pair off eBay dirt cheap and like new. I'll use the Tourglide mufflers sooner or later.

Anyway cut the old muffler off about 4 or 5" inches past the collector so it'll be just a little larger than the Harley muffler. Slit the old muffler section with a cut off wheel or hacksaw then you can crimp the pipe down to the size of the harley muffler without having to buy an adapter. It's a little more work to fit it together but if you're a cheap SOB like me, it'll be worth it.
