    When did the...

    ...'lights on/off' switch on the right side handlebar controls disappear? I just noticed that the set I polished is missing that switch compared to my '78. Now, this switch never did anything on mine because of the headlight relay, etc, so am I correct in assuming that I won't have to make any wiring changes to use this? The other wiring (off/run, start) is the same.

    This assembly was removed off a '78, but you know how that can go...

    As to it disappearing, I know that neither the 80 or 81 models had any right side switch to do with lights. Only thing there is the E-stop (stop-run-stop) switch and the starter button.

      The 79SF didn't have one either. Don't know about the 78...

      My 77 XS750 Triple had one though.

        In 1979, the Feds made it illegal to produce motorcycles for the US that didn't run the headlight during operation. So, 1978 is the only year that has the on off switch.

          My '79 F has the on/off switch. It's not really an on/off though. If you turn the ignition on, but not running, and turn the switch to 'on' the headlight comes on. Regardless of the position the switch is in, once you start it the light comes on. I've got another member's '79SF out in the mancave right now, and it does not have the on/off.
          I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

            Yep, that makes sense. And I just remembered that that bike also had a 'special' master cylinder on it, so it may have been a replacement for crash damage.

              my 81 sports has the on/off light switch,
              but they changed the laws over here too
              so the headlight must come on when the engines running,
              cant remember when tho.

                1978 XS1100 E had the headlight on/off switch, the 1979's didn't. On my 1979 XS1100 F I ordered a 1978 switch set and it plugged right into the existing harness (they didn't change the harness connections from 1978-1979.
