  • What does your flasher relay look like?

My flasher relay quit. I took it apart to verify that it was the problem, and I can see where the expanding/contracting strip of metal broke, so I know that's it. Anyways, I thought it was odd that there's a three wire plug with three slots, but the relay only has two prongs on it. Is this correct? My flashers have never self-cancelled, and now I wonder if that's why. I'm planning on picking up a replacement flasher relay tonight, but I thought I'd check if I should be getting a special three prong relay, or if I should just replace the two prong relay that was there.

    Thanks,
    Brian

A regular automotive 3 prong flasher relay won't work. If you want the self cancelling feature to work, you need the Yamaha one. Regular 2 prong will work fine, but no self cancelling.

the special three prong one from yamaha is stupid expensive, if you really want your auto cancelers PM me, I swapped out my stock relay for an electronic one so I could run LED's, and I'll let my old stock 3 pronger go to someone who wants it...

Ok, I'll pick up a 2 prong automotive relay to see if that fixes my problem.

I've got a new question... I'm looking at a parts fiche on bike bandit, and it looks like I may actually be looking at the hazard flasher relay. The relay I'm talking about is under the right side cover just below the starter relay.

I have not checked the one that's up under the tank (at least that's where it looks like it is on the parts fiche).

        Thanks,

          Hey Brian,

On my 81 SH models, the one under the right side cover is also under the fuse box, that is the turn signal relay. The hazard relay on my bikes is under the seat mounted to the frame rail above and behind the battery.

If you want to test your signals, take your hazard relay and plug it in the turn signal plug, it should work, BTDT.

I bet that's what the PO did because it looks like a motorcycle 2 prong relay that's in the 3 slot connector, and my hazards never worked. Now that I think of it, I'm pretty sure there's a loose connector under my seat that would take a 2 prong relay.

Thanks for the help; looks like I should have this sorted out in no time.
