  • Pick up coil

I pulled the four prong from the TCI and checked resistance to both pick up coils. One set (forgot the color) showed 780, the other is open. I pulled the cover and pierced the wires just as they come out of the pick ups, and they read the same.
Are there any tips or tricks I can try before I replace the set of coils.

Yep, sounds like a bad coil. You can replace just the one. No need to replace the whole set, harness, etc.

If it's open right at the coil then the coil itself is dead.

You are talking about the coil being open....right....not just the wire?

Save the old coils as you may need them for parts someday if that's the case. Be sure to mark the bad coil.

Right Randy, but as cheaply as you can get them on flea bay why hack up 2 sets? They're not that difficult to change.

I have 2 extra sets right now as a matter of fact. Tested good.

PM me KJK if you want a set.

Thanks for the info. I was hoping for a quick fix today. I'll shop around for parts next week.

I just realized by your signature that you have an 81 XS100 (add a 1 Kevin LOL) I'm not sure but I think the vacuum advance was replaced by electronically controlled advance in 81.

However I believe the pickups are the same.

Does yours have the vacuum diaphragm?

81 models eliminated the Mech advance and incorporated it into the TCI. They did not remove the vac advance until the XJ.

I do not think they changed the pickup coils throughout the entire range of 78-84.
