just got a 79 for parts!

driving down the road, 5mi from my house. i bought a 79 standard and a single cyl yamaha for $40. the xs has most of the parts, missing the left front caliper and the left side handle bar controls, and side covers. it has complete carbs, air box seat and tank. a couple of questions, are the rims interchangeable with my 81 special? if the carbs are in better shape than mine, can i swap them without rejetting, or will the jets from the 81 fit in the 79 carbs? the motor has 26kmi on it. will the heads work on the 81? i'll make a list of stuff i won't be using, and i'll donate it to guys on the list for the cost of shipping. it will be a couple of weeks before i can tear into it, as i'm going on vacation next week. no wrenching-maybe. depends on what mood swmbo is in

First off, you need to turn yourself in for grand theft!!!! Nice buy!!

I believe the front rims are all the same from the 78 through the 81 and even the XJ, bothe standards and specials. The rear are the same on the standards and the same on the specials and XJ, however it is a little involved switching a standard rear rim for a specials and vice-versa. Ohh...and the XJ wheels are swirly.

Two part answer to this one, any year carbs can fit on any year XS11, no rejetting required if they are both stock machines as in stock exhaust and stock airbox. The airbox piece is a little tricky as the 79 cabrs have vents that hook to the airbox. The 81 airbox has the nubs where they hook into, but they are not open so you have to drill them open.

The jets form the 81 and 79 carbs are generally interchangable excep the mixture screws. However, the 79 carbs use much bigger main jets than the 81 carbs so they will not work very well.

While they will bolt on and the engine may run, the heads are different and not interchangable for compression purposes.

The rear wheel on a special is 15" and the standard is 16".
The jets in the '81 are larger than the '79. Ask me how I know!! lol

close, the rear on a special is 16" and the wheel on a standard is 17"

The jets are different but if you swap the whole bank of carbs it should be fine, always jet for the year of the carbs, not the year of the engine!

Oh and you know what they say, pics or it didn't happen!

i just unloaded it with the help of my dad. maybe some pics tomorrow night. she's in rough shape. the guy used a standard toggle switch for the high/low beam. the fuse box is non-existent, it's a gob of wire and inline fuses. what a mess! i think i'm going to make a frankenmontster with it for now. i figure i can use the tank and seat while i repaint the rest of my special. i need to have my grab bar and luggage rack powder coated on the special also. by cobbling between the 2 bikes, i should be able to get it on the road in a couple of weeks. after i get my bike on the road, i'll start posting the parts that are good, and up for grabs. my first priority is getting the special on the road so i can decide how much money i want to spend on it. if someone has an urgent need, drop me a line and i'll see what i can do.

i have a pair legs with sliders the lowers look good and the slidders are decent with a few pits overall not bad send pm if interested, just swapped them out tonight. cheap. straight, for the 79 special sf. may be what you need. they are cleaned up nice, and ready for new owner.

the single cyl is a 1980. it's got a maroon tank with gold cap. it has 10ki mi on the speedo. chain drive with drum brakes front and back. that's all i've been able to tell. no side covers or seat. how can i figure out what bike it is? the chrome rims and the rest of the bike seem fair. i was thinking about getting a title and fixing it up, but i have enough projects in the garage right now. i'm thinking it's a 125cc, or maybe a 250?

Try looking at the tag on the steering head, it should have info like, year, model, vin etc....

i believe the single cyl bike is an sr250. here are some pics. anyone have a seat or a carb? here are pics of all my bikes, including the 79 parts bike. observe the fantastic fuse assembly.

That does look sort of rough on the wiring. However I can do you one "better", behold the "Fuse box" on Banshee when I got her. (Note...there are NO FUSES, just twisted and connected together wires.)



And yes, the main fuse got the same treatment!!! Amazing what some POs will do.

The Standard is a good find! I DO have a spare front fender for the Midnight. It's not perfect, but it IS black. The '78/'79 had LARGER main jets, and the '80 up bikes have the smaller jets. 79 137.5, 80 117.5, or close to it. You CAN just move the carb bank from bike to bike, so that is a thought. The '79 may NOT have the tubeless rim, as that was a mid year change. The tank from the standard will fit the special, but the seat will NOT. It's got the wrong shape on the pan, and is missing the relief for the TCI.
