  • Just an update on Monster

Been a little quite for a while, thought I'd share what I've done to the bike over the course of a month.

repaired my trunk lid, which broke at the place where the hinges connect. fiberglass is some cool stuff. Also added a catch cable so it wouldn't flop all the way back when opened anymore.

Replaced steering bearings. the old ones had been done up so tight that it was really hard to move the stem once I got it stripped to just that. Learned to keep all your old bearing parts at least until you are completely done driving and seating the bearings and races.

Rebuilt front MC. Need to rebuild calipers and replace pistons and hoses soon.

Adjusted and lubed clutch, throttle, and speedo cables...something is weird with the speedo because I know I wasn't going 20 with 5k in 2nd gear, but it caught up eventually. I lost a mounting nut for the instrument panel, so I'll pick one of those up too, should help I think.

I was expecting it to be rough after sitting for 2 weeks without starting, and I discovered one of my pipes was cold. Pipe changed when I moved that spark plug around, so I replaced the plugs and my what power...I wonder how long that's been sparking weak. Still a little rough on idle so I put some seafoam in and if it's still rough after the weekend, we'll clean the carbs.

SWMBO taught me how to use a soldering gun (she used to build computers) and I fixed my turn signal switch, now it won't short out anymore!!

And of course, cursed the fairing and wished I had a bucket and ears. SWMBO says she likes it better without the fairing, so it'll come someday.

Things that I know still need doing:

    valve and cam adjustments
    clean carbs
brake hoses and front caliper rebuild w/pistons
    TC fusebox...someday.
replace some connectors and bolts in the electrical as they are quite rusted and stripped.
    reline my trunk

Maybe I'll get a few pictures of some of the mods later, but off to work for now.

Hope you're all recovering from the awesome party at Bob Jones memorial rally...I wish I could have been there, but my grandma (93) finally went home to her maker, so I spent 36 hours driving to Utah and back that weekend instead.

Now, time to take that bike more than around the block to see how everything is working

      Hey Dale,

      Sounds like it's coming along.

Had a great time at the Bob Jones rally you should have come. Karla had a great spread.

There were parts bikes for sale there at a REAL good price and lots of parts, new and used. I'm sure there is quite a lot left and she wants to sell it all.

Contact Russ79, he's helping Karla with the stuff and he can probably fix you up with whatever you need at a good price.

That fairing is nice for LD travel but I can see where it would be a PITA running around town. And when your trying to find electrical gremlins.
