  • 1979 XS1100 SF startup- barn bike

I bought a barn bike rolling chassis and motor to play with, the motor allegedly was in very good shape. As I got into it the motor did seem to be in great shape. So I have carefully gone through it in preparation for a startup. Been though the engine, fuel, and electrical systems and all looks good for a startup. This bike is missing the exhaust system.

Can I do a startup without the exhaust headers/pipes? It will be loud for my little garage, but is it mechanically safe?

Yes. It WILL be loud, and it won't idle very well.

Also make sure there is nothing flammable in front of the engine!

Be very careful not to put your hand anywhere near the exhaust ports (of course)

All this will tell you is that it will fire up. If you can turn the lights off, for a moment, you will also be able to see if all 4 are firing and whether each cylinder is relatively lean/rich compared to the others.

Don't gas yourself. make sure the grarage door is open.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

I'd say you may want to roll it outside. The noise inside a garage may prove very painful!!

If you do want to try and start it that way,
dont let it run for to long, its not good on the exhaust valves.

              yes it can be started.

              I've done it...

and it's accualy disapointing on how quite it is...

it's much much louder with the manifold on and the mufflers off.

like the man said don't run it too long that way because it IS hard on the valve to run it more then 60 seconds at a crack.

it will only tell you that the bike runs or doesn't run.
to properly tune the carbs, you have to have an exhaust system on it.

please remember that if you remove all backpressure you will decrease performance of this bike. these bikes had "tuned" exhaust systems from the factory, that proved to be excelent for engine performance.

that and.... beer is alway's the answer......what was the question?

Most bike problems are caused by a loose nut connecting the handlebars and the seat!!

as has been said already. don't run it long because the exhaust valves won't like it (the rapid cool down when shut off is the problem and the hotter they are the greater the risk of warpage), but sunday morning early sounds like a realy good idea, I'd kinda like to be there to watch that.

I've done it before just because............................

It's not that loud without pipes on it, as a matter of fact it sounds kinda like a 4 cyl lawnmower.

Follow all the advice given though if you do start it.

                      Thank-you all

So the consensus is on Sunday morning, beer in hand, for start-up purposes only – do not run long enough to get hot, video the performance, and this goes on the list of crazy stuff.

                      Thanks to all

Yup I did it on a Friday night, beer in hand, no video but neighbors over etc. From where I was standing working the throttle it was not so bad. APPARENTLY it was kind of loud everywhere else. I was informed of this for a few days afterwords from various neighbors who failed to attend the event

                            Ftp

                            sunday morning??

                            i did a xj750 maxim carb tune-up at 3am....

the cops showed up at 430 after i was done tuning.

and i had a Factory exhaust system fully mounted on it.

                            my town sucks.

i use vac gauges so i can sync at all rpm ranges.

my neibors are going to be pissed when i do more tuning work on my 11
with the HD touring pipes on there. hee hee hee..... i think sunday at 6:01am
is the perfect time to carb tune and test fire bikes.
noise ordinace 10pm to 6am in my town..
