Indy - Welcome to Ch11! Many assembly questions can be answered by the Yamaha parts fiche. Go to the parts catalog, key in the particulars, click on carbs, and blow the diagram up as big as it will go. Find the parts, and check below the diagram for the description. I'd do it for you, but thought it would be better to teach you how to fish .
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

On my 78 and 78 standard models the needle spring goes in the hole at the bottom of the slide (on the inside) the clip goes in the middle position on the needle, the small washer is under the clip so it is between the needle spring and the clip, and the plastic spacer goes on top of the clip. The whole assemble goes through the spring in the bottom of the slide. Once in place you pull and hold the needle in the full down position and install the plastic needle holder followed by the large clip that secures everything in place. The plastic needle holder only goes in one way due to its offset pins. Make sure the large clip is fully seated inside the slide.
