Carburetor boots (joints)

I've been having fuel issues with my SG and I haven't been able to give it my attention because I travel full time. I dropped the bike off a couple weeks ago before I left town. I found out today that the carb boots (joints) are a problem, if not THE problem. I missed it because they look so good.

The local dealer has a set for $300 and I found them on the net @ $58.45 ea. I can't find a price list for SUDCO. Where's the best place to source these? I'm not interested in the PLASTI-DIP fix. Do it once, do it right!

How did they determine it was the carb hangers? If they're leaking around the flange, you can use cut down ford 2.3L thermostat gaskets. Reason I ask is you said they look good, and if they look good on the outside, they should really look good on the inside - they're double-walled. The easy way to tell if they're leaking is to spray some starter fluid around the flange while the motor is running - with a fire extinguisher handy. If the idle rises, it's the boots. I replaced mine last year only to find that the problem was in the ignition coils.

That is true, mine look like crap on the outside but, look like new on the inside. I chose to use some RTV on the outside to make sure they were not leaking. If yours look good on the outside with minimal cracks it might just be a flange leak...also look for leaking rubber caps on the brass ports comming out of the holder...

I guess they sprayed them. I'm 6,000 miles away. I left my bike at this shop because he is extremely good with old bikes. I dropped it off, so now I have to trust him. I have some PM's, I'll get to when I can find out more.

Hello all . I am having the same problem and am looking on the web to find them. From what I understand they are getting expensive. I did find a place that had them for $55.00 a piece. I am still looking around. Gailarry says $69.00 a set but actually its a piece. Sometimes Ebay is good. Good Luck.

It is a set of 4 for $69 and they fit my 80 perfectly !!

If they are $69.00 for a set of 4 , then that is the deal because others are $55.00-$60.00 a piece. And I apologize to you kind sir for setting me straight. Thank you very much for that info,Mike

I have seen a set that was erroded by gas and oil over a long time between the 2 and 3 carb. Looked OK outside but when the carbs came off they were eaten away on the inside where they seal around the carb throat.

This subject comes up often on the XS650 forums. Fortunately, there are so many XS650s on the road, quality replacements are available for them. Some of the popular aftermarket units simply dissolved from the inside over a short period of time.

I have aftermarket replacements going on my XS1100 because dealer replacements are $300. I'm hoping that I won't have to spent the $300 after spending nearly $100, and then having to clean all the goo out of my carbs. If that happens, you'll read about it here!

I have to say that I have had good luck with parts that I have gotten from siriusconinc in the past. Their parts are often made in japan and good quality. I have a set of their diaphrams in my XS400 carbs (same carbs as on the 11).
