From the main Forums link at the top of the page, scroll down to Repairs and the Transmission. Study the "second gear fix", and print it out! I am getting ready to do first/second on a '79 this weekend, and have the printout ready. Unless you have a broken gear on the main shaft, you DO NOT need to split the cases, or even pull the engine from the bike!
    Good luck!

+1 on that advise, and if you get bored of reading the directions over and over working up your courage... do a search for "second gear fix" and read some of the hundreds of threads from others who have done it.

        Transmission repair info

If first gear is popping in and out and lets say for the sake of argument, the gear is ok, would the forks need replacing, and if so, how is that done? Is that info in the repair manuals? Is any tranny info in the XJ1100 repair manual?

If the shift fork is bad, the clutch must come off to access the shift fork rod, which the oil pump coaster gear resides. There's a c-clip under the left shifter cover to let it slide out. Change the fork thru the oil pan. It's a bit tricky.

First gear "popping in and out" is NOT the forks. Go to the thread I pointed out, and READ IT AT LEAST TWICE. THIS IS WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO FIX. WE have all done this, and I am going to do a transmission this weekend, with help from a member here. There are members close to you, so you may have some help if you ask.
