  • 1st Gear Replacement

Yay, I just got my license, now I'm just about ready to roll on the XJ. The exhaust system is coming in tomorrow too. 1st gear is gone. I was thinking to replace that now rather than later as I don't want to be stuck in front of a traffic light with the transmission accidentally thrown in first and have it jammed. Well, I heard the transmission can be split with the bike upright which saves me from having to drain the oil. Is that correct? I'd like a few tips so I can do the repair as quick as possible.
    Thanks

I would highly suggest going to the top of the screen under XS11 Info and go to Tech Tips. Look under repairs for the transmission link. Then pick the 1st 2nd gear Dremmel repair tip. Read that very carefully several times over.

As to oil, if your going into the tranny, nothing can save you draining the engine /tranny oil. But perfomring the repair on the centerstand can keep you from draining the middle and final drive gear oils.

+1 to that. Also, do yourself a favor and read ALL of the tech tips, even if they sound like stuff you'll never need. It's amazing how the little pieces of information become important when you least expect it.
