  • hot start not so hot

Okay- one more thing... benched in good on the carbs at this point, ign all good, etc. Runs nice, power decent, idles good at about 800 (low, I know), and the plugs are showing a little fat, but it doesn't load up or anything. After I shut it off (hot), it takes a little bit to get it started. I imagine it's a float issue, but hate to mess with it, since it runs good. I removed the octy, and was wondering if that contributed in any way to letting things get a little over in the bowls when it's shut down and on the side stand. I took a lot of time to set floats and went through it all several times, and hate to mess with it and lose what I got. Other otion is to let it run a bit with the petcocks off I 'spose. Any thoughts?

If your turning off your petcocks after you park you should be fine, I'd guess that its just a touch too rich still. You said its a little fat, and when its hot that makes it act "richer" then cold. Try giving the throttle just a little twist when you hit the starter, if your a bit rich the quick blip will lean it out for a moment and let it fire, there was a thread about it a while ago. Try turning the idle screws in just a bit and see if that helps.

Sounds like the floats might be set just a little too high.

      You still running the octy?

If you let it idle that low for long before shutting it off it could effect the restart.

Also, every one of these I have ever been around starts harder when hot. Typically takes a little throttle as you hit the starter button then let off. Sometimes, if it has been just that perfect amount of time to cool down, I have to gove it a touch or choke, bump the starter for a second or two, then drop the choke off and it starts.

Okay- let's see if my post goes this time...
          The octy is gone.
I know it's a little fat, and the idle low, but it runs pretty well. I ended up out 2-3/4 idle screws- started 2- 1/2, then down to 2- 1/4... seems to like this the best. Doesn't load up, and the pipes are not turning color from some wierd lean thing, so I would like to leave it where it is for now, still thinking about float level , though--till I get some miles on it and get it all sorted out some more. There was a minor issue with the idle not settling down right away- took a second or two- but that seems to have gone away with these settings. I still haven't vacuum synched it yet, either.
I was wondering if they were a little reluctant to pop right over when hot- I know some things do that, and I also need to get a hot start routine figured out. Everythings got it's quirks and like one thing as opposed to another. Think I'll try blipping it to shut off, and crack it to open- see how that works.

Nothing counts till you get that synch done. Really strange things can go on when they aren't matched up right. I'd be happy to lend you a hand an my gauges if you come down this way...
