No, someone at one point replaced the exhaust as that one is an aftermarket. Nice looking MNS.

+1 on the replacement. ALL Midnight Specials came with the black chrome exhaust systems. It didn't matter what country it was sold in. The 850's, XS1100's, and the rest that Yamaha produced ALL had "the look".

Yes, he may not have replaced the exhaust, but someone has since it rolled out of the factory. None of these came stock with a turnout exhaust system, and the MNS all came with it black chrome from the factory.

          Hi jimmy and welcome,
the seller may not have replaced the exhaust but somebody did.
That chrome thing is for sure an aftermarket item.
OK, the bike is in Lloyd but where are you? Close enough to go look at it?
If it looks & runs good, go for it anyway. A Midnight in good nick does command a premium but while you are dickering, remember that the aftermarket chrome drops the sale value.

            replaced plastic

is it possible he could have replaced the plastic coverings with "midnight special" coverings or is that a little paranoid

Nah, there are all the gold accents. But it looks to me that perhaps the entire engine was changed out as I believe those were all black also.
This what it should look like.

It kinda looks like that engine IS black. The valve cover is, as are the side engine covers. The rest is just caked with dirt. The engine case should be a matte black finish, with the edges of the cooling fins sanded down to shiny aluminum. Everything else definitely makes that an '81 Midnight Special. Especially the gold swirly wheels.

well i have about $2000 in budget for a bike, what would you guys pay for a bike in this condition? aftermarket chrome does take it down but im not sure how much.

getting pretty excited about this special!!

Its what is it worth to you, if you look around hard enough you can find these bikes for less then 500 bucks, however you'll spend some time and money getting them back into shape, do you want a project? If you really like the bike and it runs and rides well, good tires, etc, I don't think I'd give more then 1500 for it, but thats me and I tend to be cheap. Take a look at the "how much" thread, a lot of info on how much folks have paid, and what they've put in after "buying" the bike.

                      No

There is a LOT wrong with that bike. Is it close enough to go see it? The badges are in bad shape and some are missing. The engine is changed out (look at the front view). Those are Mac turnouts. The pics are bad with missing critical shots.

I paid $1200 for mine in better shape and that was too much.

                        Hi Big John,
agreed, J-B has to go see the thing, hear it run, check if the engine & frame numbers match, all that stuff, before he'll know if he wants it and how much he's willing to pay.
Quoting Texas prices for a bike being offered on the Saskatchewan/Alberta border ain't much help to a potential purchaser.
FWIW, I paid $1,000 for my XS11SG in far worse cosmetic shape which was an acceptable price 5 years back in Saskatchewan.
