  • Which ignition coils to use??

I'm replacing the coils on my 80SG. I have several choices. Dyna and Acell make coils that fit these specs
1- 1.5 ohm coils and leave the ballast resistor.
2- 3.0 ohm coils and remove the ballast resistor
Which route should I go? Is there any advantages or disadvantages to either setup?
Dyna makes a mini coil DC1-2 it looks like it would be easier to mount. Anybody ever install a set of these?

The common choice is the green coils from MikesXS.com. They sell a better, black version too, but they are usually out of stock.

Part #17-6803 are all you need. They put out far more than the stock coils ever did and bolt in the stock location with no mods.

The green coils would be good if your going to run a turbo, supercharger or nitrous, but are overkill for an otherwise stock motor.

Either way don't forget spark plug wires.

The 3 ohm and lose the resistor is the way to go. One less part to fail.

What is the primary resistance of this coil? It does not say on the website. Do I need to keep the resistor plug caps or can I loose them?

Hte MikeXS black coils have been known to go bad in a relatively short time span. Several members have only gotten a few seasons out of them. That is why many step up to the green coils.

I have not changed my stock coils out, but I believe you still use the resistor plug caps unless you run the resistor plugs.

The TCI does not care what the resistance is on the spark plug wire side, just the power input side. The resistance caps are for radio supression only. You can run any type caps you like. If you're using an electronic device while riding, use either resistance caps or resistance spark plugs.

                    Green Coils

I have the Green Coils coming in the mail. Can't wait. It is a horrible feeling experiencing your coils demise.

I forgot plug caps, so i will get some at a local auto parts store. I may need a little help on the install when they get here...but thanks to beardslee it seems like a simple install.

I had a set of the black ones (17-6803). They lasted 7k miles and crapped out. I'd opt for the green ones, or a set of Dynas from Z1 Enterprises. The Dynas are basically the same spec as the black mikes coils - 3 ohm primary resistance, 30kv output, but with beefier windings. The green mikes coils put out 45kv with a 12v input, and 75kv with 14v input. Whatever coils you decide to go with, don't forget to open your plug gap a bit - .035"-.040" on the green monsters, .035" on the black mikes and dynas. NGK Iridium plugs pair very nicely with either.
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

How about Accell, Which ones and keep or eliminate the resistor? I forgot and I also was interested in coils sometime soon.

I've got a set of the black Mike's XS coils, but I haven't installed them yet. Hopefully They last more than 7k miles! I guess I won't be doing any long trips without my old ones as spares.

I've already eliminated the ballast resistor on mine... just one more thing that can fail, and I don't like the idea of wasting energy through a resistor when it could be going to a spark.

I will not buy the black ones from Mikes XS again. Had them for a short time before they died. Only had them about 3 months

Yep, the black MikesXs ones quit on me too, 10 miles from home, had to limp it back on 2 cyl.
