I'm trying to find how to convert my 79 xs from shaft to chain as I got the bike free and it has got hit in the back. SA and final drive are toast. Motor seized, gonna rebuild, hardtail and hope to convert to chain. Cant seem to locate info on site am I not looking deep enough in forums any suggestions or help offered would be great.

Look for xschop. He has a conversion kit you can buy, for about $800 IIRC.
You CAN get a replacement swing arm and final drive for about $75, if you watch ebay. If you search on "fat tire", I think chops thread will come up.Ray Matteis

Hi Dacian and welcome,
(anti-hardtail rant omitted) If the SA & Final drive are toast, most likely the rear suspension is FUBAR too and the least costly fix is (shudder) a hardtail.
It's likely that a used FD will cost less than a chain drive conversion and the conversions I've seen on this list are limited to a maximum of 13T on the drive sprocket and IMHO that's way too small for good chain life.
A hardtail should have perhaps 4" stretch and the FD mounted on a plate with an open shaft drive.Fred Hill, S'toon

Here's to Fred, everyone! The model of restraint!!Healthy is merely the slowest rate at which you can die
Some people will tell you that slow is good - and it may be, on some days - but I am here to tell you that fast is better. I’ve always believed this, in spite of the trouble it’s caused me. Being shot out of a cannon will always be better than being squeezed out of a tube. That is why God made fast motorcycles, Bubba….Hunter S. Thompson
