  • rear d404's are worthless!!!

i just bought this hunk of rubber s%(* in april... i have 200 miles on it and it's not going to last another 1000 i am sure of it. the center is already worn down to the markers. there is plenty left on the sides though. i don't get it. i don't spin tires ever. the bike is not as heavy as stock because i have no centersatnd, nor airbox, a 4-1 exhaust. slotted rotors.
my firend has a 02 1100 v star that is heavier and he says he gets about 7000 miles out of his. my roads on the way to work are all twistys so the sides get used most.
so far i am liking the spitfire rears i got about 7000 out of the last one. any body have similar problems out of the d404 or does this sound like another issue? how much pressure do you d404 users have in the rear. i am running about 38. i weigh 190 with gear.
    thanks

Well, I have a D404 that I have put over 3500 miles on. And it does not look close to end of life yet. No nubs left on it, and it does not show any flatness in the center.

I had D404s on my XJ750 for a season and a half and they were down to the tread markers also. Mostly riding back and forth to work not twisties and keeping them 38 to 40 psi. (don't know the mileage speedometer didn't work)

i used to run at 38-40psi in the rear,
and it wore the tyre out like that,
my bike is naked and i dropped the tyre
pressure down to 32psi, i know others run
a higher psi but try different pressures and see
              what works best for you.

Rear tire life comes from 3 factors; proper inflation, actual tire composition, and how heavy your wrist is. Wearing out the centers doesn't happen from bike weight, or breaking. It is from acceleration.

not arguing with what your saying,
but the total weight of the bike and rider (load)
will be what determines the correct tyre pressure.
its easy to say to have the correct tyre pressure,
but going about achieving this is easier said than done.
also braking will wear a tyre out maybe not as much as
                      accellearating, but there is wear.

Sure there is some... But, unless you predominantly use your rear brake alone for stopping, it would be near negligible. I would imagine more wear from engine breaking/decceleration.

Ever try running the pressure recommended in the Yamaha manual? Just asking...IIRC its something like 28 front and 32 rear... dont hold me to that though.

                              hey marshy,
the clymer states 26 front 28 rear for loads up2 90kilos
                              28 front 36 rear for loads up2 153kilos
and max load 36psi front and 40psi rear.

from my own experience i was riding 2 up for a while i ran
38psi in the back, when i ditched her, i never dropped the trye
pressure and have noticed my rear center tread wear a lot faster
in the last 500k's than it did when i was riding solo at 32psi.
