  • timing adv on my 81?

i've been following the threads on the timing adv on our bikes, but mine seems a little different. i have an 81 mns, it has the 4ro ign. module. the motor is a 4r0. i have a vacuum line going from the #2 carb body to the left side of the motor, where the timing adv is located. i'm confused, as what i've read said that my bike should have electronic adv, not vacuum. any ideas?

The electronic advance is built into the TCI, but it's still got a vacuum advance too. My understanding is that the electronic advance makes up for the lack of the mechanical advance mechanism, that also works in conjunction with the vacuum advance.

I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

Yep, Doug nailed it! The 81 models removed the mech advance, but kept the vacuum adv. Mech was changed to electronic in the TCI.

Now, in 82, when they switched to the XJ, they also removed the vacuum adv, changed it to a vac sensor that signals the TCI and built that advance into the TCI as well.

Thanks for the explanation gentleman. seems like a strange set up, but it works.
